Several people have asked about this class. I had the opportunity to take it in VA earlier this year, and it is hands down worth every dime, and every second of time. It is the only class, to my knowledge, actively addressing movement and structure issues for the individual or civillian context.

    Course Description:
The ShivWorks Armed Movement in Structures (AMIS) course is a twenty hour block of instruction focusing on negotiating movement problems within structures with limited or no resources. Realizing that
moving through a structure that contains armed hostiles, perhaps by one’s self, is probably the most dangerous task one can undertake, the best options for winning a confrontation are presented with the qualification that there is no safe way to do this. This is not a live fire class, all training will be conducted in actual structures, not shoot houses. You will be testing what you learn against thinking breathing, moving opponents.

    Topics covered include:

    Day One (12 hours)
    · Viewing the environment in terms of the unseen
    · Vertical, Horizontal, and Diagonal planes of visual obscurement
    · Distance variables and the visual apex
    · Threshold evaluation
    · Dynamic and Deliberate movement
    · Room Entry factors (known versus unknown)
    · Minimizing multiple exposure
    · Modifying the fighting platform to conform to cover and concealment
    · Re-setting/Disrupting the adversary’s OODA loop
    · Chalk board exercises
    · Dry-runs
    · FoF evolutions
    · Low-light module

    Day Two (8 hours)
    · Practical Exercises for egress, search, compliant subject considerations, and third-party rescue

    Equipment Required:
Airsoft pistol, airsoft ammunition, wrap around eye/face protection suitable for Airsoft and man-marking
    cartridges, holster, groin protection, flashlight.

    About The Instructor:
Southnarc served in the US Army Rangers before entering law enforcement. He is currently the commander of an inter-agency drug enforcement task force and a SWAT Team leader on the Gulf Coast. For a number of years he did undercover drug work, resulting in a number of serious physical assaults on him. These assaults included “rip-off” robberies, much like the robberies private citizens fall victim to every day. Southnarc is one of the most analytical trainers in the business, and as a result of these incidents he made a thorough study of Pre-Assault Indicators, Weapon Access During an In-Progress Fight, Empty Hands Skills to escape from a grappling attack or multiple assailants, and more.

    Thanks,

    Sweet.

I just mentioned, during a break at the range last weekend, how a Southnarc class was high on the 2010 training priorities list. Then I log on to INGO, and here this is :D.

    Couple questions:
    1. Does he run the MUC module during the AMIS classes?
    2. Any specific recommendations on Airsoft pistols for this sort of thing?
    Thanks!

You will see a lot of the MUC material throughout the course. It kind of permeates most of his work. But he won’t teach the exact same module he does in his IEK or PUC courses.

I generally recommend the KJW Glocks. They seem to be tough little guns, and match the live guns exactly for carry gear usage.

Just bumping this with a little more information. I’ve been asked a lot of questions about what this class is all about, and if it’s as physical as some of the other classes you see from Southnarc on the net.

In short, no, it’s not quite as physical. This isn’t about physical contact, it’s mostly a thinking tactics course. I think Southnarc said it best during the course evolution I took last year, AMIS isn’t about the fundamentals of manipulation and shooting, it’s where we start to teach people to be tacticians.

This class focuses on structure movement, and clearing while armed. It is geared towards the solo citizen, LE officer, but anyone who finds themselves alone, or with others who are not armed, and has to maneuver through a structure can benefit. This is particularly relevant to day with the ever present active shooter scenario as well as just being able to investigate a bump in the night as safely as possible.

Southnarc will cover some of the differences between team movement, and solo work, we’ll cover low light work extensively, including several runs in low to no light.

As I said, we won’t be going hands on like you have probably all seen, but the mental aspects of this class as well as the force on force airsoft runs through live buildings are intense.

This course really will change the way you look at the environment around you, and how you interact with it.

AMIS isn’t about the fundamentals of manipulation and shooting, it’s where we start to teach people to be tacticians.

This is why I'm really looking forward to this class. Thankfully, it's pretty easy these days to find competent instruction in marksmanship, manipulation, and, to a lesser degree, mindset. It is much harder to find a weekend class that focuses predominately on tactics.

Now I just need to get my hands on an Airsoft gun..... :D
