Any experiences with the Ruger Gunsite Scout .308? I've got a crush on one now, just hoping someone can talk me into or out of another purchase my wife will give me grief over. Thanks

I thought that I once wanted one But Price & Ruger Proprietary mags persuaded me otherwise

General info Kirk, saw one @ LGS in LH to boot...liked the way it shouldered and action seemed smooth enough. Trigger seemed ok for battle rifle. Just found out that mags were proprietary Ruger. I don't know anyone who has shot one, and $800+tax is a lot to drop for me on a crush. Any problems or quirks passed along would help make my decision. Ruger reputation seems good enough for me, just no experience with their bolt guns.

    General info Kirk,

    I don't know where to start, but . . .

It's a Ruger so re-crown it. Needs a trigger job. Why Ruger did not go with a single set trigger like on the CZ527 I do not understand but after my discussion with Mr. Fifer at the Pittsburgh Annual Meeting I realize it was all about price.

The flash suppressor is goofy, but I can live with it and I understand why they did it.

It lacks a mid-post for a C.W. sling (you would think it would have this for a C.W. slings on a Scout) like I like on Scouts but go with a Ching Safari sling and you'll be fine.

The mags are AI. Very nice as a result. It should have a mag cut off, but as Mr. Fifer said, it was about cost and, besides, how many in today's gun culture knows what a magazine cut off is.

Trigger seemed ok for battle rifle.

    :dunno:

Battle rifle? The Scout is not this, but a general purpose rifle.

If you mean it is squishy and has too much play, I agree but I am picky about triggers.

Ruger reputation seems good enough for me, just no experience with their bolt guns.

Ruger makes a decent gun for the money. Mr. Fifer understands that he cannot make the best rifle but strives to make the best rifle for the money.

Look at it this way, you get 90% of Cooper's definition for 1K. Not too shabby.

To get it right the rifle needs another 4 to $500 bucks.
