Disassemble to remove the grip. File, sand, dremel, grind.

Please don't post after pictures. I couldn't bear it.

You are not just removing metal, you are also removing value. IMO

    But it is your property.......

It's the grip frame, they are replaceable.

FWIW I don't shoot over 255gr in my 44's and take a low grip on my SBH's, so my hand never rides up to that area. In fact it doesn't ride up for the first few shots (when done in rapid succession).
Does thump the thumb pad on the hand pretty good shooting that way.

IIRC replacement grip frames are over $150 new, and they're a little oversize, so you have to work them for fit. My dad has put a few Dragoon style frames on his regular Blackhawks. Good small set of files, various grades of abrasive cloth/paper..............and time.

A buddy at work is letting me borrow his Bisley hunter. Maybe the different shape will help me hold on. Thanks for the replies.

FWIW I grew up shooting reg SBH's so the Bisley frame me no likey.
Some folks get thumped by the Dragoon frame, I don't.
Bisleys do annoyingly touch a knuckle now and then, no pain...............just odd...............and annoying.
Peoples hands and shooting styles differ.
Thankfully we can change grips and frames to get something we like :)

I'm thinking of ditching my SBH and going back to Smith.

There's nothing wrong with modifying a mass-produced item to better suit you or your needs. Just understand the consequences on resale/collector value, and the likelihood of achieving an acceptable result.

For a component that's (fairly) easily replaceable, go for it. If you end up hating it, you can always put it back and consider it a lesson learned. Just use the least aggressive tool you can, go slow, and check often.

I have a '94 Del Sol in my driveway with a '99 Civic EX front end in process of going on it. Throw a project thread up on one board and you'll get thumbs up, on another you'll get death threats. Just do what makes you happy, don't destroy any history, and let live.
