After 30 yrs of shooting factory and surplus ammunition exclusively in my mil-surp rifles, I have decided to start reloading. (I know....couldn't have picked a worse time to start). I would like to find a single powder for .303, 30-06 and 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser. I have been reloading handguns for close to 40 years and have settled on a single powder (W231) that works well for my needs. I would like to try the same approach with my mil-surp rifles.

Any advice or first hand experience with these three calibers would be greatly appreciated.

I began researching 30-06 loads for a Rem 742 and found that a lot of the guys were using 4895 in the surplus 06's. Just saying. I have no experience with the 303 or the 6.5. Wish I could help.

Thanks Wing. Since all three of these rounds use similar weight bullets, I am hopeful to find the Goldielocks powder for all of them.

Short answer to big question. Generally speaking I use 4064. Biggest difference is going to be case volume. 30-06 or 303 150 grain bullet- @2500 fps is 42 grains of IMR4064- Same bullet at 2800 FPS needs 51 grains. 6.5 X 55 is smaller case and lighter bullets. For bullets 140 grains and less I use H4350,

Are you wanting to load for the M1 Garand? IMR 4895 seems to be a go to and a reasonable place to start.

I have never messed with it but IMR3031 should work in all of those cartridges.

The rifles I will be loading for are-

    M1917's for 30-06
    Enfield No4's, No1's and P14's for .303
    M96, M94 and M38 Swedish Mausers.

I know the 30 cals are a different animals than the 6.5's, Might be wishful thinking to run all of them under a single powder.

H4895 will work in all three of those calibers. I also have M1917's, No4 Enfields, and Swedish Mausers and it is my go to powder. Finding some is going to be an issue though, which sucks because I have worked up some sweet loads for my M1917 and M-1 Garands with that powder.

That's the information I was looking for. I have seen good things regarding H4895 and each of these calibers.

I know it's the worse time possible to start this, but I am going to see what I can do anyway.

    Thanks for the feedback :yesway:

    ^^^Suggestions:
    WW-760/H-414 (Same powder)
Hodgdon BL-C(2)/ WC-846 same spec powder.
    CFE-223
These will work for all of the calibers listed-NOT the best in all, but will work...Bill
