Finally made my first gun purchase and picked it up yesterday. I took it home and did a field strip and messed around with it to learn what I'm dealing with. After a while, I noticed my slide won't lock back unless I leave the magazine in. So, I would have to slide back and then take the magazine out, which I thought generally you're supposed to do it that other way for safety.

Disclaimer: I'm very new to guns so I could be typing gibberish .

Yep normal. When the slide is back you can engage the slide lock on the left side by pushing it up into the notch in the slide and it will lock back.

while it's locked back with the empty magazine inserted you can press the slide lock/release and it will go into battery. (I personaly do not like doing this method.) When you have a loaded mag you can simply pull back on the slide (pinch method is my choice) and it will go foreward.

M&Ps will also go into battery if you slam a new loaded mag in while it's locked back. It's supposed to do it.
