I have to agree! Why turn them in to be melted down?

And, what is the (cough, ahem) BS about checking the ballistics to see if the firearm had been involved in criminal activity? If this is a 'No Questions Asked' surrender***who would the cops tie the weapon to even if it was eventually found to have been used to harm or kill someone?

Of course, these could be a variant of those 'come get your free turkey for Thanksgiving' deals where all the police are doing is luring people with outstanding warrrants to a safe place to make the arrest, only it's a fishing expedition to find the owners of illegal firearms or match a known ballistic pattern to a surrendered gun and the person who turned it in.

This does raise a question in my mind, however, for those who offer more money for these 'unwanteds' and actually do a FTF sale prior to a turn in, what happens to the buyer, should the firearm actually be stolen, or have been used in the commission of a violent crime?

Seems to be a possible no win situation on either end. :dunno:

By the same token, how can we be sure that the firearms listed in the classified ads on this site are not stolen, or were not used in the commission of a crime? Unless you decide to take it down to the local PD AFTER you have spent the money, you will never really know, unless you bought from a person you personally know and trust. Of course, if you do this the gun and it was used in a crime, expect to lose your money as it will be confiscated.

Did the "outbidders" pay more for the guns than market price after the bidding? just curious.

They only bought a dozen, so I imagine they offered $110 only for those guns which looked to be worth at least that much. Granny with her deceased husbands model 29, etc.

There's a buyback coming up at the end of April in East Chicago (NWI). As soon as I read it I thought about doing the same thing.

Obviously the Austin PD is onto something, it's a little known fact that the greatest threat to law and order in their town is a bunch of geriatric gangbangers brandishing double barrel shotguns!!!!

It won't be long before the government comes up with rules/regs that make this type of citizen buy back illegal. It all looked pretty peaceful and the commentator was calm and well spoken. Some of the cops looked pretty anxious on camera though. It looked as id there were some nice long guns in the guy's trunk but the handguns appeared to all be on the crappy side. :twocents:

This makes me almost WISH for a gun buy back locally! 110 for a Model 29? That would be worth buying just to laugh at the look on my brother's face when he fires off 6 shots from it.

I don't disagree with the buy-back program, but I'm also not going to GIVE a "peaceful, law-abiding, citizen" a gun, free of charge. I haven't seen anyone on here asking for a free gun. If their defense were so important to them, they would find a way to obtain the money to purchase an inexpensive, but reliable gun, to be used to protect their family and themselves. Isn't this the same thing others would label as a socialist practice? I would participate in a buy-back, but anything purchased would go directly to my home.
