So I bought 2000 45 FMJ from Precision Delta. My first purchase with them. They arrived and I started making a few measurements. Started finding large variances. So I pulled out 100 random bullets out of the case and measured length, diameter and weight. Here is what I found:

Is this normal for Precision Delta? I'm worried about the drastic variance in both weight and length. My pressures will certainly go up with the shorter bullets as my case volume decreses. Am I making to much of this? Seems inconsistent production to me.

How do they function and shoot?

Wouldn't the volume decrease with the longer bullets?

If the bullet is seated further in the case and the same powder charge was used this could cause some ugly pressure increases.....

Pressures will decrease as the OAL gets longer because the area inside the case is larger thereby allowing for more expansion, if the bullet is seated to deep the volume is decreased causing higher pressures.

Think of it this way you are driving all alone in your vehicle, where is the pressure level???? Pretty low right..

Now add your wife and mother-in-law.... Pressure went up right???

Decrease in volume equals increase in pressure...

I found that the 115-grain 9mm FMJs I bought from them had unacceptably large variation. I won't buy them now - Montana Gold and Zero get my business.

This is my first purchase from PD. Haven't loaded or fired any yet.

I'm thinking of sending the an email with my measurements and seeing how they respond.

What kind of variations, if any, does Montana Gold have.

I've only used bulk winchester in the past.

Montana gold bullets are much more consistent, but, unlike you, I didn't approach the measuring in a scientific manner (which is kind of funny since I work in a lab). I can olny tell you that they are more consistent in weight, length, and width. There is some minor variation in overall length. Very slight variation (+/- .5 grain) in weight.

If nothing else, PD's prices are very high. Check out this company located right here in Indiana. I picked up 1000 9mm 115 and 1000 45acp 230 yesterday. Going to the range tomorrow.

I don't get it. Precision Cartridge sells loaded rounds. Precision Delta sells bullets. How are these prices comparable?

Edit: OK, I get it now. Precision delta does have loaded ammo for sale on their site. But I think we're just talking about the bullets here (which suck, in my experience).
