Just started stripping and cleaning my first SKS, and ran into something odd. I know these milsurps you get from the retailers are always a little iffy, but this is confusing.
I started by field stripping and soaking in mineral spirits, then scrubbing each piece and laying it out to dry. After taking a break because of a chipping stock and sticky magazine, I started looking at the serial numbers and the bolt.
The firing pin seemed spring-loaded, and the cross pin wasn't holding the extractor in. Also, the serial numbers for the stock/trigger group/receiver all matched, but the bolt/carrier and the rear cover didn't.
Looks like I have a 69ish Chinese SKS with, for some reason, the spring-loaded early 50s Russian bolt and matching carrier!
My question is: is this something rare enough to try to sell? I was planning on sending the bolt and carrier off for the pin upgrade anyways. Also, should this chipping on the stock worry me? I can't see any other cracks or breaks. Sorry to ramble, but I might have been breathing in mineral spirits fumes for too long.
