Name That Snake

Markings look like garter snake but head shape throwing me off, plus thicker than most garter snakes I've seen.

It is definitely a type of garter snake. I think it's among the "blackneck" types.

Looks like he is flattening his head to look more threatening (venomous) than he actually is.

Anything not in or on the house I try to leave alone. King snakes eat rodents and poisonous snakes.

I like snakes... I wouldn't want one uninvited in my house, though.

Back when I was on Long Island, we had a milk snake just sitting there in my dog's bed. I had to pick it up with an extendable arm and walk it into the woods.

GrandFIL would catch them and put a spot of paint on their heads to ID them later. Some got to be friends. Rhubarb would come out of his hiding place to say hi.

Pretty little garter snake. My grandson calls them "Stinky Poop Snakes", after his dad caught one that pooped all over him last summer.

The one in your pic is working hard to look big and mean. He's flattened his head and body out, that's why he looks thicker and his head looks more triangular than usual.

The male California King snake in my avatar is long gone, and the only snake I have left is a female, one of his daughters. She turned 20 years old this past July.
