been there with a cousin who crashed back in '96, plane was missing for 5 days. He survived miraculously.

I'm glad all went well for these two also.

    Why was the door important?

Opening the door before impact keeps it from being crushed, trapping you inside. By opening it prior to impact, the frame of the fuselage will distort, but most likely the door will separate from the plane rather than jamming...
Standard crash training for a pilot... They did it by the book and had great results...

(Yes, been there, done that 1993 north of Ft Wayne near Ashley IN )
It does give you a different prospective on life... and death...
Very glad your brother did so well through the 'experience"... Curious as to what kind of plane it was... Looks like a low wing rather than a high wing, so I'm guessing a Piper or a Beechcraft?

    ... Still Flying....

The plane was a 1974 Piper Cherokee Warrior. The pilot certainly did the best he could with what he had to work with, I'd like to think he steered I between the trees but he told me only God saved them.

You and me. That was 5 days of hell for not knowing what happened to them. I was also friends with the one that didnt make it.

OP, I am so glad that they are alright.
