If you want to know where some of the active areas are, check the stickies. While the state has, for convenience, been divided into thirds (MSG1 - North, MSG2 - Central and MSG3 - South), it proved to be too hard to plan events for areas approximately 150 miles wide and 60 miles deep, so various smaller groups have sprung up. There is an MSG that meets in the NorthEast counties, one near Lafayette, one trying to form in the Carmel/Fishers area, and one in Hendricks County that is trying to get started.

What is becoming apparent is that proximity plays a strong role in getting started. If your members are too spread out, it makes it difficult to meet and plan, as well as making the "mutual support" portion of the idea difficult. The best bet seems to attempt to locate folks within easy driving distance and see who is compatible.

Try PM'ing people in your area that have expressed interest in this but are no longer posting in the thread. Some may no longer want to speak about it in "public" in fear of ending up on "a list". This week I met another member of this fourm and their reason for no longer posting in the Survival and Disaster Preparedness section was fear of ending up on "a list".

Ok, I have been mulling this idea over and given the current concerns about the economy, etc., I thought it would be good to roll out here and for consideration:

    INGO Area Mutual Support Groups

Purpose: To facilitate and promote skills, materials and communications between individuals in a local area with the intent of a mutual response to a short or long term crisis.

Organization: None beyond a phone list and a commitment to helping others and accepting other's help as needs be. No central leadership, no uniforms, no ranks, this is not a militia.

Meetings: Gather once a month for a dinner and planning/training session. Individuals take turns to lead a session in an area of their experience/expertise or simply in something they have researched (if no-one has other training). Organizing to go as a group to CPR classes or other professional training would even be better.

Activities: Camping trips, hikes, trips to the range, and so forth. Members who have can help those who do not. Better yet, trips to bulk food stores to stock up on supplies or other suppliers of emergency materials.

Intent: To make sure that people in the same area are as possible, and to continually increase that preparedness. Additionally, to have contact capabilities between area members so that when the power lines go down and INGO goes dead, we are not a bunch of individuals sitting alone in the dark. For those who would bug out, let's work together to make that a better possibility. For those who would have to bug in, let us make sure we can coordinate efforts to mutual support possible.

To be clear, this is not militia training in the sense of small and large unit military training. This is neighbors banding together to help make our community ready if a disaster were to happen. Furthermore, this should all be fun!

As a way to move forward with this, anyone in Monroe County or a surrounding county who is interested, PM me. I think the best way to do this is to find out who is interested and start with a picnic and a few trips to the range (I can only take one person at a time - yes this means you Nate).

    Let me know!
    Techres

P.S. Yes, I went with MSG because I likes my msg... :):

    12/31/08 UPDATE:

Since people have shown interest in MSG's it would make sense to have some structure to help things along. How about we break the map up into 4 areas (or more as the case needs)? Lets try this to begin with, unless someone has something better:

    msgareas.jpg

I know that Silentwarrior has go the ball rolling up his way (Area 2). There is a core already started down here in Bloomington in Area 3 and we hope to do some get together's before long. Area 1 and 4, who knows?

If you are interested, post your username and area and what you can teach/do and lets start up some groupings!

    UPDATE 07/10/09

Due to being overwhelmed with Appleseed and INGO Moderating, I have neglected the MSG activities. Thankfully, longbow has stepped forward to take over and start making things happen again. My thanks to him and I look forward to seeing more picnics, shoots, and training sessions. Thanks to everyone!

Is this idea still alive? If so how does one join?

People ending up on a "list?" So people are being labled because they hangout with other people and participate in the things they all like (shooting, surviving a natral disaster, etc.) = lame.

These "Lists" do exist at some level due to Home land security and a few other Gov. agency's. We are being trolled. Do I care...no, not really. Is it right...no, not really.

A new group is starting u[ in and around Plainfield/Avon area. Small right now with just 1 meet and greet but the potential is there. Info is posted in the survival thread.

Pretty much how I feel about it. I have NO plans in any way, shape, or form of making any type of attack on my Country, Elected Official, or Government Agent. AGAIN NO PLANS!!! NONE!!!

I simply wish to make sure my family is taken care of when the SHTF. I'm not going to sit and wait for help to show up while my family is in need of food, water, shelter, heat, or what ever else they may need when the SHTF.

In 2008 an ice storm took out the power to my home for several days. That's to the Kero heater, propane buddy hearters, a few deep cycle batteries and inverters, we didn't have to leave our home like some people. Some of the people through the county had to sleep on a cot at one of the volunteer fire stations in their township.

Yes that is VERY LAME, but it is happening. A little while back a member posted a document on here that is being passed out to law enforcement agencies to watch and report people to the Federal DHS if they were found to be doing any of the things on that pamphlet.

One of the things listed was making a 72 hour bag even though FEMA RECOMMENDS you make one!!

If I can find that thread again, I'll edit this post and add the link.

Expressions of libertarian philosophies (statements, bumper stickers)
Second Amendment-oriented views (NRA or gun club membership, holding a CCW permit)
Survivalist literature (fictional books such as "Patriots" and "One Second After" are mentioned by name)
Self-sufficiency (stockpiling food, ammo, hand tools, medical supplies)
Fear of economic collapse (buying gold and barter items)
Religious views concerning the book of Revelation (apocalypse, anti-Christ)
Expressed fears of Big Brother or big government
    Homeschooling
Declarations of Constitutional rights and civil liberties
Belief in a New World Order conspiracy <--- Wouldn't belief in the UN fall under this???

There's a few things on this second list of reasons I can understand them putting you on a watch list for (IE the support of violent crimes.)
