You know this is a topic I take for granted. I learned knots in the old fashioned way. My scout master and dad taught me :) Now I see it all the time. The simplest knots and yet most do not know them. Ask some one you work with to tie a knot by the name of the knot...and they look at you like you are from another planet.Well knots have many uses.Especially in a survival situation. So here it is,a knot guide. Not to degrade anyone but it was made for 12 year old boy scouts :)

    Good list.

I often use a double figure 8, and dont see it there. I like a Blake's hitch better than a prussic for climbing trees.

There was a time when men lived and died by knots. The various trades all had their own uniquely suited knots. Knots probably predate fire and the wheel. No knots - no cloth. No knots - no nets. No knots - no seafaring craft, no global exploration, etc.

And yet, gradually, adhesives, tape, velcro, screws, various fasteners, etc. have moved us away from everyday dependence on rope/cordage and the associated knots.

It's an incredible shame and the ignorance of the typical person with respect to knots is astounding.

Recommended book - Ashley Book of Knots. Not so much a how to guide as a book showing and describing about 4,000 various knots.

Good list. Yep, knot tying is a dying art. I use just a half dozen knots to accomplish most field tasks. If I am not using them, I practice them regularly. Ones like the water knot or figure8-back through are harder and require more practice for me to be good, quickly.

IMHO, one book that should be in everyone's BOB: The Boy Scout's Handbook. Elementary, but it covers a lot of ground in a relatively compact package.

reps to the OP on a knot thread. I see it every day. You can even teach a guy a knot one day and there he is winding up "hatchet" knots the next frigging day.

I make it a point of every apprentice I've ever had work with me learns knots when ever there's a slack time. Don't matter what trade you work in you should be able to tie and untie a bowline, half hitch, taught line hitch, figure eight...

Amen, and it will be in my BOB when the time comes. Its right next to my bed right now, lol.

I agree knots are something everyone should learn and practice. I forget some, but do pretty good on remembering the most important ones. I need to work on that..
