Then I paid and walked away.

What would you say?

Protection? I just didn't want anymore questions but it made me wonder what others would say... I was temped to say, "why are you wearing a coat?"

Maybe he's been considering getting a LTCH himself, and was wanting to learn more about it. In that case, my answer would be even more appropriate, and could have opened a very productive dialogue.

Don't feel bad. It takes a lot of nerve to ask someone that. I've never had it cross my mind to ask someone I noticed carrying a gun why they were carrying it, but then again, I know it's not a sign of a sociopath because they have a gun on them. I was just tossing out ideas.

I usually ask them why they carry a spare tire and insurance.

Then tell them the same thing. "Just in case."

I've never been asked, but these are the ones I've toyed with using as answers. I suppose it will depend on the tone in which the the question was asked.
