Why is it that Independence Day is referred to as the "4th of July?"

Is it not important enough to know what the holiday is?

Why do we call all other holidays by their names, but not this one?

It pisses me off beyond measure when people say 4th of July.

    It's frickin' Independence Day!!!!

I can only imagine how many people don't have a clue what the 4th of July really means.

    Future generations are doomed.

    True.

    What happened to "Merry Christmas?"

Are people just too offended to hear the mention of a holiday they don't recognize?

What about Jehova's Witnesses? They don't celebrate any holidays. Should we just stop saying, "Happy Holidays," as well?

I guess I never thought of it this way.

I love stuffing my face on November 22th, again on December 25th, and washing it all down on December 31st!

:) I think a lot of people just can't spell independence. (I think about 25% of our country has forgot what that word means! *BA-ZING*)

    Happy Independence Day!:patriot::rockwoot:

You want to know why we don't say Independence Day? It's probably the same reason 25% of Americans don't know what country we gained Independence from!

It's so sad. It's a good thing there's still some good parents out there. If we left to up to the (re)education system, we'd be doomed.

    DadOfFour, I assume you're a parent? A father, perhaps?

The only hope is to teach your kids what they need to know. The schools won't do it. You already know that, though.

Granted that they are children but I asked my step children what was important about July 4th.... their ages are 18, 12, 8.... They all said fireworks... I wanted to slap some sense into them but I just informed them that we are celebrating our independence from the english crown..... And then the 18 year old hit me with the," Guess we'll be celebrating that again come November huh?"

It's been called the 4th of July for ages. Suddenly it's not OK to call it the 4th anymore? I think we have bigger issues.

How many people celebrate Independence Day, and have no clue what it means?

They think 4th of July is for fireworks. It sickens me that this many "Americans" are this clueless.

There should be a test for all Americans. Fail, get deported out, and if you want back in, you have to go through the same process as any legal immigrant.

That would thin the heard. Our government would probably shrink, too.

Not hard questions about dates and stuff. Just things about our history and founding that every American should know.
