blank back from heat treat and ready to GRIIIIIIND!

    08212010051.jpg

here, i make my edge thickness. i knock a 45 degree bevel into the front, and then typically grind from the spine down to that tickness. when the front end bevel disappears, your there.

    and, your there.

great balance here. when the handles are on, it will sit heavy in the hand, making the blade very agile.

how about a little baby swedge.......... ;)

    08212010057.jpg

i then tape the blade to protect it. i have taken the blade to a 120 grit finish here. alot of makers go MUCH higher. i don't make knives for show, i make them to use. a find a lower finish (i will stop this on at 220 grit) makes it easier for the user to go ahead and beat on the knife.

draw out the slabs and cut.

these pics are out of order. i clamp and drill the holes for the corby bolts. i then go back with the counterbore and make the depth correct for a secure hold.

you can't work on the leading edge very well after it is installed on the front. so you should finish it out before installation on the tang.

all parts ready for glue up.

    08212010066.jpg

check the fit one more time. you do NOT want to get the epoxy all done, and go to town only to realize it DOESN'T fit right! trust me, i've done it. more than once.

glued up, ready to hurry up and wait. here is where i realized that i forgot the freakin SKULLCRUSHER!

    08232010070.jpg

    08232010071.jpg

THERE! you happy. skullcrusher! i didn't take pictures of how i ground it off, for the simple fact that i assumed i was going to mess it up. it looks better than i thought it would, and the pics stink. so i will go ahead and finish it off as is.

knock the edges off of the handles. you want to get a good radius on the back. teh front needs a little more detail in spots. thinner here, thicker there. your hand is not flat, and the knife handle needs some contour. depending on the design and the mission, sometimes ALOT of contour. with the teardrop handle on this one, a swell towards the butt usually does best.

shape the handle. take the handle to 400 grit (also varies upon customer and design). hit it with wd40 to see what she looks like.

remove tape and view knife. see if it looks right, feels right, smells right.

retape the blade, as nicely as possible, and prepare for sheathing. the form of the knife will press into the sheath, so the tape MUST be nice or the tape job will show in the press on the sheath.

    bottom knife is for jsharmon.

    Looks damn good, Joe!

When can I pick it up?
I'll be in Gas City on the 25th of Sept.
If you have free time that day, you should come shoot with us.

Cubby, I didn't see my knife in the picture. Am I an orphan, tossed to the wind and left to fend for myself? Wait....wrong forum...so when will I see my beauty in pictures?
