Schneider Confirms Alcohol Tax Rumor To Bail Out CIB

The Star's Mary Beth Schneider confirms what I learned from a legislator yesterday during our State House rally that there are discussions among legislative leaders of raising the state's alcohol tax to bail out the CIB. "Negotiations are under way in the legislature to bail out the financially struggling Capital Improvement Board, possibly by raising alcohol taxes," Schneider writes. "The CIB, which operates Indianapolis's professional stadiums, is facing a $20 million shortfall this year, and that could grow if the Indiana Pacers, which are losing money, are unable to pay their $15 million share of the costs of Conseco Fieldhouse." She adds, "The CIB would have to make up that money somehow, and already has done such things as cutting funding to the arts."

I saw a shirt I'd love to have. On the front it said "GO COLTS" and on the back it said "AND TAKE THE PACERS WITH YOU" I loved it. We pay millions for those over priced thugs to live the high life. The lowest paid player on either team makes more in one game than most folks do for a year. or more!

Don't blame the players for their salaries, the owners agreed to pay them those amounts. As far as the players ethics, well, people are people no matter how much money the make.

So, who is to blame for all this nonsense?

The answer, the owners of the professional teams and YOUR legislators.

    That is all.

Nothing like taxing minimum wagers to support spoiled millionaires. Who says serfs are a thing of the past?

Glad I don't drink or smoke anymore. If they really want to make some money, they'd start taxing fast food.

We can complain all we want but we voted these fools in to office.

I enjoyed the Pacers game last night, but then again I got the tickets for free.

I love how I have to give my tax dollars to two teams I cant stand. Im a Denver Broncos and San Antonio Spurs fan, give my money to them!! I say if you are a fan, which I am of the above mentioned teams, I have no problem giving them money because they bring some joy into my life when I watch them on tv or go to a game when they are nearby in chicago, detroit, or indy. If you hate all sports, you should never have to pay anything to keep them and there stadiums afloat.

    Hum.. who is at fault?

    YOU (the NFL consumer).

Why do biz's go out of biz? Cause they can no longer sell something that the people are willing to buy. So long as YOU are willing to watch the games and they can make a profit from it there will be million dollar contracts, half time show OPPS!, new stadium builds, etc...

Oh NO NO!! We got no controll over this corrupt citys milking of the public. Any more than we do the government. These A-holes do what they want at the cost of our taxes and childrens education. While they dine with devils.

I don't understand why the teams don't totally support themselves like the Dallas Cowboys do. Let the owners build the stadiums/arena's and have them deal with the profits/losses.

I personally could care less if we have teams here in town or not. I guess I'm a college sports fan more than anything.

professional sports are the modern day gladiators. The government is glad to steal your money to fund public entertainment. After all, if you didn't have the games, fantasy leagues, stats and the personal soap operas of the players to follow, you might have some spare time to see the stuff they are perpetrating on us.

We, the public, have no control over what the city does to fund the sports teams. It's the mayor, the CIB and others that bend over backwards to keep the teams here. The Colts got the deal of the century on their new stadium! They pay no rent, get all the ticket proceeds and a pretty big chunk of the concessions. I think they even get part of the money from other events that are held in the stadium but can't say for certain. The sports teams hold the host cities hostage by threatening to leave if they don't get their way. The Pacers owners, the Simons, are some of the richest guys in the country and say they can't afford to pay to run the team anymore. It's so simple to fix all of this. Pay the players less and use the extra money to operate the team and facilities. Most of those guys have had a free ride since their early school years and get everything handed to them. They think they are above the law and better than all the working class people that come to see them play. It's just another example of how our society has it priorities all out of whack. People can name the sports and movie stars but know nothing of our history or how our country is supposed to work. Have you ever seen the Jay Lenno "Jay Walking" thing where he grabs some "Cool" people off of the street and ask them simple questions about history and current affairs? They think we fought the British in WWII and the war of 1812 was in 1973! They can't name the pictures of George Washingtom or Abraham Lincoln, they sure who that ass Bono and the skank Britney Spears are! It's pathetic. Sorry for the rant....
