Shared it. I imagine the obligatory "You have nothing to hide if you have nothing to fear" responses will be making their appearance shortly. One point I mentioned is who is going to foot the bill to assemble and maintain the infrastructure required to maintain this much data for two years? Also, at what point will we be safe enough? How much more authority do we give the state over our personal papers and communications?

I use my texting for the very same thing and I think you are right about them tracking some phones off and on.

this is why i say nothing that could be construed as -sensitive- in text, on the phone, or on the internet. call me paranoid.

feel free to rifle thru my porn history, dirty messages, and rants about personal accountability.

Man I hate when people say "It's OK I have nothing to hide". Misses the whole point. Do we really want need to be a country with EVERYONE being spied upon 24/7? I think this group of police are as creepy as the TSA. Some LEOs wonder why they don't get the love on this site sometimes - here's one reason.

I make texts that (taken out of context) could be used against me in Federal crimes. I'm just an a**hole with heavy handed satire. I think I'd have more to worry about than a lot of people if this started.

I still don't care. They can read my sexting logs, internet search, call logs... whatever. Just like they can stop me and tell me open carrying is a bad idea. I'll just charlie mike and smile.

I just checked my search history on my phone.

I go out of my way to talk about sex, drugs, rape and murder in text messages. Just in case they are listening, want to keep them on their toes.

I believe you 100% too. Sounds like you as far as I can tell.

Just keepin you on your toes boys :lmfao:

whats worse, being spied on for security reasons, or for profit?
google and facebook are some of the biggest companies on earth, and got there by doing exactly this.

    yes.

you can do what you wish, but in the country I grew up in, we always heard "Show me your papers" in a thick German or Slavic accent (in our movies and comedic entertainment) and it was why we cherished OUR freedoms. 30 years later, we are becoming what we were supposed to be fighting against and saving the rest of the world from. This is just one more example of such.

I agree with this also, but no one ever thinks of this anymore. Somewhere we have lost the idea that things COST money.

It still ticks me off that when I shop for communications services, I am told its $30 a month, or $50 or $100, but when I get the bill its another 5% in fees!!!

911 is a good idea, heck everything can SOUND like a good idea, but somewhere, sometime, WE have to pay for it.

I guess I don't see the outrage. We get court orders for phone records all the time (not me personally). I THINK they are saying they want the phone companies to keep texts much like email providers already do. LEO STILL has to get a court order to view it. Where is the outrage for email privacy? Why is this different?

Exactly....from this point on I refuse to have any interaction via electronic means, hand written correspondence, or general human interaction.

This message will self destruct in 3 minutes...

because a private company in the end still can't openly have me taken away in chains for what my phone has in its memory.

In full disclosure, I don't text because it costs money. Still in general its stories like this that make me realize how little of our lives are private. I just wonder what is actually done with whatever data they collect. I don't think many of us will ever really know. Lawyers tell you to expect your electronic life to haunt you.

Texting is like a lot of things, you just have to use common sense. Don't put anything in writing or take pics of anything you wouldn't want someone else to see or that can be used against you. Leave no permanent record and problems are prevented.

I like to send texts as if I am role playing a terrorist talking to his cell buddies.
