thanks, i've been trying to research it online but as always, cannot find a concrete answer or a reliable one. I know everyone has their own preference but just like the .223/5.56 is very popular and easy to come by, I would like to get a rifle in a larger caliber that may give me the same options.

    7.62x54

I would add 30-30 to this list also.

A lot of it depends on what part of the country you're in. Probably a great deal more .270 Win in the Plains and Rocky Mountain regions, too.

Most of the above you can find at just about any Walmart that sells ammo.

IMO, it's a good thing to have a rifle in a ubiquitous caliber.

7.62 x 39 would be the easiest I think off the shelf. It's been a couple weeks ago, but walmart in Anderson said they had 50,000 rounds of it in stock. Probaby gone now though.

I think with the current panic buying going on .308 is still going to be the easiest to come by.

I was at 2 Walmarts and Gander today... in order of approximate stock quantities at Walmarts (nobody in their right mind pays Gander's current prices)

    12 ga bird
.22 mag (LOTS of this available)
.380 (Full stock at Fishers Walmart)
    .38 special
    12 ga buck
    .270
    .30-30
    .308
    .30-06

    NONE of

    .22
    .223
    9mm, .40, or .45 (except ppu brand)
    I bought the last of the non-Winchester 7.62x39 :D

I don't think I have ever seen the racks at Kmart without 243 Winchester, 270 Winchester or 30-06 Springfield. On my last trip there I know there were at least 10 boxes of each.
