Caliber/cartridge hasn't been much for narrative building locally. I never had a prosecutor ask me about it. I think the biggest downside is cost of ammunition and increased recoil for no real payoff vs human targets. Lots of folks say things like "I'm not recoil sensitive", and they probably aren't. Until they are injured and/or shooting with a compromised grip. People tend to assume they'll start their gun fight standing and healthy. Often they get their wish, but not always.

When it comes to "caliber will get you himmed up" There's usually more to it than caliber. A lot of people want to throw out the case of Harold Fish because he used a Glock 20. However if you get into the weeds of that case itbwas more to do with several inconsistencies with his statements at the scene. AND the way Arizona law was at the time (one had to prove they were in real jeapordy where the state did not have to prove anything to not charge you. (AZ changed that since but, Don't make a statement until you talk to an Attorney. Statements are like bullets, once you make one hard to take back)

Similar to the Phoenix Officer over the dust cover. It wasn't the dust cover that got him charged and removed it was a shady shoot AND the dust cover inscription was against policy.
