First off thanks for all the advice and humor. I took a small piece of oak and a 4lb hammer to the garand today and persuaded the gas block off the barrell. Some slight corrosion there, cleaned it off, oiled it well, and had to use a hammer to put it back into place for the last 1/2 inch or so. So we have success and a not so frustrated owner now. Thanks again all!
