Agents accidentally shot while gun being holstered

    Published: 8/5/08, 8:45 PM EDT

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Two federal agents wounded in an accidental shooting at the federal courthouse were shot when a U.S. Marshal's gun went off as he was trying to holster it, federal authorities said Tuesday.

Officials with the U.S. Marshal Service said a deputy marshal and a U.S. Border Patrol agent suffered gunshot wounds Monday morning when the marshal was trying to holster his gun after removing it from a security locker. The agents were in a secure hallway on the courthouse's third floor.

The agents, whose names have not been released, were treated at a local hospital after the incident and have since been released.

Yes, keep your finger in the trigger until your gun is fully holstered. Always good for a bang. I think getting people in the mindset of removing their finger from the trigger and indexing any time they are not about to immediately shoot is the single most import thing to teach.

Also a good reminder that if the gun falls (out of a locker for example) LET IT FALL. It's much more likely to go off if you try to catch it than if it hits the ground.

Agents negligently shot while gun being holstered

    Published: 8/5/08, 8:45 PM EDT

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Two federal agents wounded in a negligent shooting at the federal courthouse were shot when a U.S. Marshal's gun went off as he was trying to holster it with his finger on the trigger, federal authorities said Tuesday.

Officials with the U.S. Marshal Service said a deputy marshal and a U.S. Border Patrol agent suffered gunshot wounds Monday morning when the marshal was trying to holster his gun with his booger hook still on the bang switch after removing it from a security locker. The agents were in a secure hallway on the courthouse's third floor.

The agents, whose names have not been released because they won't be able to live this down, were treated at a local hospital after the epic fail incident and have since been released.

I'd say pretty much all 4 rules apply. Weapon on safe (unless it doesn't have an external manual safety), treating as if it were loaded (especially since it was loaded) not pointing it at something he didn't intend to shoot (other agents) and the ever popular booger hook off the bang switch.

A bit off topic but where do US Marshals come from? Are most of them former LEOs who apply for a federal gig like the Marshals?
