by my favorite law professor, Glenn Reynolds. This particular article was about the flooding in Baton Rouge and the governments slow response.

Learn from Louisiana, be the help: Glenn Reynolds

He made a number of good points, particularly about large-scale disasters, but the lessons apply to prepping in general.
The truth is that it’s better to be the help than to wait for help. There’s one group of first responders that’s always on the scene at every disaster — the people who are already there. After a disaster, roads are likely to be blocked, power lines are likely to be down, and it’s likely to be days or weeks before outside help arrives in any quantity.

I remember after the tornado in Nappanee, the local Amish and Mennonites came out, and had most of the debris cleaned up before the FEMA Disaster Response teams arrived. They didn't ask for outside help or Federal money. They just quickly rebuilt using their own resources and went on with their lives.

There was a documentary that talked about prior to Hurricane Katrina making landfall, G.W. Bush and FEMA wanted to pre-stage response and rescue assets just outside the projected disaster zone. They also recommended that the citizens of New Orleans and all along the Gulf Coast evacuate inland, away from the storm. Both the Mayor of New Orleans and the Gov of LA refused federal assistance at that time, and said that they had a handle on it. As it turned out, that was far from the truth.

I give credit to President Bush for not landing at New Orleans after the hurricane. His arrival would have hampered response operations at Naval Air Station New Orleans, while his jet and team was on the ground.

Good reason to carry a gun too - you are your own first responder.

Make sure your response is an effective one.

    Could be anywhere
Blind reliance on others is a disease of the left. Some prep so that they and their family may survive...others may be just preparing to die noisy pitiful deaths by being completely unprepared to help themselves.

Well let's not forget how .gov swooped in and disarmed/removed all firearms from those attempting to protect themselves, then there was the rapes and murders, not to mention the police officer that shot the guy trying to get out on the bridge, its all on video...

President Bush actually violated the Stafford Act which specifies when the federal government can respond to a disaster with federal resources. He did, in fact, have FEMA activate all 26 US&R Task Forces and pre-position them outside the affected areas, as well as pre-deploying something like 48 million MREs and a like quantity of potable water supplies, even though he was not legally supposed to deploy support until after the State Governors declared a Disaster Emergency and formally requested federal assistance, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour did, but the Louisiana Governor did not do. The delay in getting supplies and support to the affected areas in Louisiana and Mississippi were strictly due to the huge numbers of downed trees that forced responders to literally cut their way down to the coastal areas. It still ticks me off that Bush expended all that effort to mitigate the disaster and got absolutely zero credit for it.

Well, he did get credit for not doing enough fast enough and for being racist, so that's something.
