The Denny Crane character was created to ridicule gun owners. Shatner was great, but the series wanted to portray gun owners as irresponsible, narrow minded and a threat to good liberal values.

If you're a fan of the Denny Crane character, I recommend watching the last season of The Practice. I never was a big fan of the show, but it was the last season, after James Spader's character was added to the cast, and when the other memebers of the firm took him to court for something (I can't remember what), his lawyer was Denny Crane. That James Spader and William Shatner characters, I think, were only meant to be pick-me-up for the last season of the Practice and to help wrap up the story, but after those two ran with their parts the way they did, the network must have known that they had something.

Anyway, that last season of the Practice is pretty good TV, Sharon Stone even had a part in a few episodes, as a crazy, loony chick.
