I'm considering claiming a mostly unused closet into a place to store my firearms, ammo, cleaning supplies, etc. Presently, things are kinda spread all over. Couple long guns here, a handgun or two there, ammo over yonder, cleaning stuff in a tub that wanders all over the place (swear that thing has legs).

My wife is very understanding, but even saints have limits. I'm wondering what all I need to do to convert the closet into my personal armory, for lack of a better word. I know myself and will go way overboard if allowed.

We don't have kids and none come to my house, so it isn't like I need things locked away from little prying hands. Just looking for storage so everything will be in a central location and protected from rust and other environmental things.

Do I need humidity control? Dust protection? Good way to hang or lay the actual firearm? So what would y'all do?

Depending on the shape of the closet, I'd put shelving on one narrow wall for ammo and cleaning supplies. Maybe build racks for long guns to stand up in along the other 3 walls , and hang the pistols up.
Of course I'd swap out the light for a fluorescent one. Maybe cedar or a pine wainscoat the walls....done

A light would be nice. Even with light coming in from the room, the corners are probably going to be kind of dark. I have gun cabinets (the Stack On kind) in a few closets. I understand though that your closet will be the "cabinet". For handguns, I put in some pegboard inside the doors of the cabinets, so you may want to consider mounting a section of that on one wall or on the inside of the door. I bought some of the standard "J" hooks for pegboards and sprayed the hook part with rubber coating (or you could use some kind of plastic dip) and use them for hanging my handguns. Pegboard is versatile in that you could use different style brackets/hooks for your long guns to lean into, and it gives you the ability to adjust the spacing so that it works best for whatever type of firearm you're hanging or leaning. Shelves (heavy duty) on one wall for ammo and cleaning supplies would be a good idea too.

If we didn't have grand kids that visit frequently, I'd like to commandeer one of our bedrooms to make one my "armory", but alas, I'm stuck with a bunch of cabinets here and there wherever I can make room for them. :):

Assuming the door is on the 8' wall, I would put some type of locking cabinet, if not actual safes, at each end of the closet. Little prying hands aren't the only ones to worry about. Putting everything in one location that isn't very secure makes it easier to clean you out.

Russiaville? Cool. Did my very first alcohol license there years and years ago!

I love these questions. You tube has all kinds of cool ideas.

How about an electric dead bolt with control panel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr2haCyUy9Y

How about a hidden room with a bookcase "door" on tracks (awesome): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHCz8AiLFDw

The deadbolt/panel one was cool! However I could see one of my dogs closing the door on me while I was in there... :xmad:

You assume correctly. If I used cabinets, would I have a humidity problem?
