Need some opinions on barrels. Assembling "building" an AR for primarily range use. Mostly bench at 100-500 yards. I'm wanting an 18" or 20" and prefer a 1:8 twist so I can shoot the 55 gr bullets I've got as well as the 5.56, heavy barrel.
Be nice to stay under $400

    What brands should I consider?
    CHF or SS?
Should I look at 1:7 so I can shoot the 62-77gr bullets?
    5R rifling?
    Wylde chamber?

Yes, either woa (white oak armory), odin works, or rainier, wilson arms, wilson combat (the last 2 are different companies)

    Check jse surplus website,

Thread in October that was similar but didn't really have the info I wanted. Tried searching through a couple other sites like M4 and ARF but everything I found was several years old or older. Found some info on ST, FN, DD, Noveske but in 6 years a lot changes and was hoping that I'd find current info. (Pretty sure I saw Mater on there). That gives me a couple to look into since I've not seen those names show up. Keep 'em coming.

If I'm off base on the other specs feel free to let me know what your opinion is on what I should look at. Thanks for the input.

A whole lot of info on the .223 cartridge. I would do a 1:8 twist. It'll stabilize the majority of even the heavier bullet weights. I've not had any personal experience with WOA but I've heard lots of great things about them. Here's a 26" stainless barrel with manifold and gas tube for $300. White Oak Armament | AR15 Barrels | 26 inch .223 Varmint Barrel | 1 in 8 Twist with fitted Gas Manifold and Gas Tube

    or a 20" 1:8 with manifold for $285 http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/xcart/product.php?productid=17824&cat=312&page=1

$256 but if it was in stock, I could tell you where to get it for $210.

I built an LR-308 for my dad using a Mega barrel and it's a tack driver.

i wanted the same and went with a faxon 18"rifle. aim offered it to me with a low profile gas block for 159 but I ended up purchasing it direct for 157 without a gas block. haven't got to check moa. been waiting on my scope over 5 weeks.

I'm a fan of Rainier Arms. Not only are their barrels very good, they'll drill and pin a gas block for $40 and it only adds a day or two to your delivery.
