Anybody know what this is before I throw it out?

    Thanks for the good info. Now that I know what it is, I will have to use it. I have three chimneys in this house I have owned since '06. I haven't let the wife have a fire in any of the fireplaces until I can get up and have a look down the flues. I also have slate roof I have been staying off of until I finally had a way to protect it.

    The tool did have a rope on it when I got it at auction. I had no idea what it was, but I wasn't gonna let on to all the other ol' boys standing around. I, like one of the previous posters, just thought it looked interesting and worth my dollar.

    I get it now; I'm pretty sure I have to lightly spray the plate with a lubricant, Lower it down to the damper, then yank the rope to spring it open and draw it up the flue, scraping as it goes. Now, why didn't I think of that?

    Ummmm not sure it will fit down your chimney depends on the age of your house.
