I have done so much research on my next gun purchase it is insane!! Without a doubt, 4.5" SA XDM. I have been back and fourth on the 9mm and .45 ACP. I have owned a 380, 9mm, .38, .357 and .40 S&W. I have narrowed it down to the 9mm and .45 ACP for my choices. Convince me which one is the best. This will be my EDC and the 9mm is 19+1 and the .45 is 13+1, so there is plenty of rounds of each. The thing that has me leaning toward the 9mm is I will take it to the range quite often and 9mm is almost half of the cost. I don't want to get into reloading so that is not an option. I will be purchasing tomorrow so I need help ASAP!

P.S. The guns are the exact same price!

For plinking I like a 9mm for cost alone.
For EDC, .45 is my thing. Nothing like 230gr of old slow lead to leave a hole and an impression on a "socially undesireable" element.

I have the XDm in 9mm and have not regretted the purchase. But the 45 is a nice round as well. It comes down to personal preference really. I chose 9mm because of the added capacity, lower recoil and cheaper ammo prices.

The 45 is definitely a show stopper in my mind, but the 9mm is so much cheaper to shoot and the XDM's are a pleasure to shoot in my mind.

9mm & 40S&W runs pretty close in price for FMJ's. I found when surfing on line for bulk price. A 1000 pack runs around $300. for 9 or 40 & 45cal around $400

    Do you reload?

    Are you cheap?

All I ever hear from 9mm guys are how they need the extra capacity. I dont personally buy into this logic and reasoning but they do and thats all that matters.

I will forever be a .45 guy but my EDC is going to be .40.

In my opinion the advantage of 9mm is:

    cheaper ammo for plinking
less recoil for faster target aquisition
    more capacity

All of these things dont even come close to swaying my preferance for the .45 because:

reload it almost evens things out
dont be a limp wristed girl
how many people are you realisticlly going to be shooting at?

cue the music.... ITS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!

If youre looking at the 9mm, Id suggest looking at the Winchester Ranger prior to making a purchasing decision. The Ranger rounds are epic SD rounds and are as gnarly (IMOP) as a standard 45, but without the huge exit hole.

For an EDC, save my life, this will be the gun I use if I ever have to use one.....
    I go with the 45.

I voted 9mm. That is what I carry and use at the range.

I may change my mind if/when I start reloading (but I would probably go to .40 rather than .45)

My primary EDC is the XDm9. It used to be an XD45, which I still have.

Love them both, trust them both, effective with both...

but ammo cost and capacity outweigh the minimal round performance difference.*
6 rounds of capacity difference is 6 rounds PER MAGAZINE that you carry.

*Modern HP defensive rounds have narrowed the gap between these calibers significantly in the last decade.

Do you shoot one better than the other?
I personally find myself more accurate with the nine in real world training.
Sure, if I use a good stance, both hands, and wink at the target, I shoot the same with both..... but my accuracy and speed (especially on follow up) suffers greatly with a 45 when I use my weak hand, snap fire, do failure to stop drills, or awkward firing positions.
Remember that shot placement is every bit as important as caliber.

I know for a fact my acquisition is slower with the 45, especially a follow up shot. I guess my question is, shooting a target at 10 feet, is the velocity or penetration of a 9mm better than a 45 or at that distance is it not going to make a difference? I am not so much worried about the round count because the 45 does have 14rd capacity.
