I can almost guarantee it’s still in the barracks somewhere. Some boot is defecting himself because his Corporal told him to ‘hold a package’ for him and he couldn’t say no.

In my somewhat limited knowledge of how C4 in particular is stored, I imagine it’s just like anything else in munitions.

I think you might be surprised how easy it is to gain access to areas you don’t have official access to on a military base. Things ‘walk away’ every single day.

The military ammo inventory system is broken beyond belief. It’s probably an accounting error. You wouldn’t believe the amount of things we “found” not on the books.

-source, I spent 8 years as an 89A ammunition stock control and accounting specialist

An in-law who was stationed in Germany in the '70s told me about them being ordered to BURY A TANK before an inventory inspection because it turned out their unit had an extra.
Seems like that would be a GOOD thing but I don't have any idea of the paper work involved

I would have thought it would have been easier to just drive it somewhere on the base and leave it there.

"THAT tank? I don't know anything about it."

Yeah...I know people who work there...not going to visit.
It's worth a visit, especially this time of year.

Joshua Tree NP is amazing and with high temps in the 70s, the "lake" won't smell that bad.

    That's not a ringing endorsement...
If you don't stay on base, you'll never notice the smell. :D

In all seriousness, I absolutely loved that area. Being raised in a cornfield in Flatland, USA, I didn't expect to love the desert. My USMC son-in-law and daughter lived there for a few years. I went every chance I got, as long as it was between December and March. I don't need to be there when it's 120 degrees.

We'd fly into Vegas and rent a car, then drive the three hours to 29. And about two hours of that drive are across the Mojave Preserve where you might see about a half dozen other cars the entire time. It's an awesome trip.

They have since moved to Quantico, Va. It's not nearly as much fun to visit.

    ...
    Fixed it.

    - source: I spent 22+ years as an officer and nearly any kind of inventory outside of classified material was a continual headache/mess. And that's only the parts the NCOs would tell me about. The classified inventory was pretty damn scary some times.
