When I try throwing a ball for a human and try to get them to fetch it for me, they generally just look puzzled and do not understand. Unless I say it is a sport and tell them some rules, then they happily fetch. Dogs do not need rules to play fetch(other than the do not fake me out rule they have ingrained in their DNA).
