I recently started reloading 9mm for competition. I’m using CFE pistol and I’ve been seeing inconsistent powder drops. I’m loading on a Dillion 750. I know that charge weights can vary some but I’m seeing .4gr swings. My target weight is 3.9 and I’ve seen weights varying from 3.7-4.1. I’m wondering if this is due to the shape of the powder. My concern is that if I get a couple rounds with 3.7 in them when I go through chrono I may not make minimum power factor. Has anyone else seen this? Thinking I’m probably going to have to switch powders, most likely titegroup as I’ve heard it drops very consistently.

Pistol vs rifle powder metering drum? If I'm using a rifle drum for less than 10 gn charges, I see that kind of fluctuation. Change to pistol drum and those low charges become very consistent. Just a thought.

I've only seen that sort of fluctuation in flake type powders that didn't play well with the 550b. That doesn't really pan out as I believe cfe pistol is spherical. I used power pistol with great success on 10mm for many years until I couldn't find it during and post covid. It's back now, but I've made the switch. My guess is a second for the powder delivery system.

**** Clean your powder measure on a new machine ****

Use some Hoppe's #9, One Shot, etc, and get the packing coating off the measure. Clean it well, dry it out and there won't be any more issues.
Absolutely give it a good cleaning and I lube with dry powder Teflon.
I also wonder what powder bar he has in it? OP are you using the small powder bar?

Pulled the powder measure off and found the expander/ powder tube full of powder stuck to the walls. Wondering if it had some kind of oil left in it from the machining process. Cleaned the tube and powder bar. Dropped 15 charges and they were all exactly what they should be. Pic is the end of the expander/ powder tube.

Well, I've been using big flake Bullseye and Unique since I bought my first Dillon in 1983. Never a problem.

Now that I think about it, my Square Deal B is probably due for a cleaning. It tends to vary a few tenths of a grain - thanks for the follow-up post!

Excuse me while I go clean off my powder measure. I have heard of the shape of extruded tube powder being an issue, but never experienced it. I've never had issue with CFE, but I did run into an undercharge for Titegroup once while first starting .38Spl.
