Headed to New England and I typically travel with a .357 J Frame 3 inch or one of my single stack 9mm options. Question for the group is what do you travel with if you are on a road trip? I know my carry license does not have reciprocity in many of the New England states and NY but I am not going that far from home empty handed. Guess I will have to trunk it or bring my handgun safe along for the ride...

Driving my semi.....9mm M&P Shield plus.

Pleasure/vacation trip.....two of them. One for me, one for the wife.
Also a Mossberg Mariner 12 gauge comes into the hotel rooms with us.
The original M&P Shield is typically my go to choice and I have a technaclip installed for holster-less carry. Wish I had the Plus model though!

Well, the trigger on the Plus is nicer, but I would not think twice about carrying one of my original Shields. I would just carry two spare mags, for 27 + 1 rounds.
It's simply more convenient to carry the Plus and one spare for 30 + 1.
I suppose there are pros and cons to either arrangement, but I certainly wouldn't feel undergunned with an original Shield.

    But........there is that trigger. :p

That is why I like my Springfield XDS a little bit better... Waffle cut grips and a way better trigger. I shoot them both well enough to be confident carry options

On multi-state drives I like to ride with my 9mm revolver. I use my 986 2.5". I like the 9mm and moon clips to easily load and unload where needed. I usually always pack a 9mm semiauto as well. Which one depends on where I'm going and what I might be doing.

I’ve thought about if I ever had to take a trip like that… my Taurus model 85, and either a shotgun, or my Rossi .357… no high cap gee gaws in my car…,

Op has a two part question.

    1) what can you carry to New England states? Particularly New York
    2) what do I carry when traveling in the Midwest?

#1 - New York. Nothing really. I had to sterilize the car. I ended up taking an unloaded shotgun locked in a hard case with the ammo stored separately in a small ammo can. So I was effectively unarmed, but a gun did go in case of a zombie apocalypse. Also you can not have body armor and I would be careful with certain knives.

#2 - currently on a business trip. I have a small S&W CSX here in the hotel that I wear concealed. There is a Glock 26 locked in a safe in the truck as well as an 18” shotgun.

subcompact 9mm. But with a low-capacity (10 rd) magazine when traveling through anti-2a states (and normal magazine otherwise.) Unloaded in locked case in truck when in anti-2a states. For New England, I try to spend time in New Hampshire & Maine, which are very pro-2a. And then drive straight through to Pennsylvania which is fairly pro-2a. Spend as little time as possible in all the others. With enough effort, you can avoid the rest, but unfortunately New York is unavoidable when driving. :(
