so my stock of perfecta is getting a little lower, understanding I am not going to see $6.00 for 50,rounds if ever again. I am considering buying online there seem to be a few reputable vendors out there.

Having not purchased Ammo on line before, I am guessing it is shipped UPS? Also I would guess it has to be signed for?
I am trying to figure out if it would be feasible it would be a good idea to order some especially with free shipping.

so my concern is the actual delivery part, there is not usually anyone home during the day, and we have a secure gated property.

so I am wondering if they would deliver or just leave a we missed you tag and I would have to spend an hour going to pick it up?

    Thanks

Most of my online purchases are nicely sitting by my door when I get home & I get an email or text confirmation. I rarely have to sign for them. If I do, I can digitally pre sign off on the delivery authorizing it. If uncomfortable about the delivery, you can reroute it to a UPS store, etc.

I've used several vendors and had thousands of rounds delivered without issue.

As for the gate, you can give the driver the code if you want in the email or instructions on delivery placement.

Typically it's shipped via UPS or FedEx. It may or may not require a signature. I think that's up to the shipper. I don't know about UPS, but FedEx "stores" no longer accept ammo shipments (if you wanted it held in case you wouldn't be home). They will accept it at a main hub if you have one near you. I think UPS *might* be the same way but I'm not certain.

It's going to depend on the retailer.

Some offer a choice of shipping companies. Nearly sure that USPS is not one of them.
Some offer an option of "signature required". It's not a mandated requirement.

Others will not give any choices in their shipping methods.
Rarely, they could require Photo ID submitted to prove you are 21+ for handgun ammo.

@DoggyDaddy is correct, that "stores" won't hold the shipment but hubs will.

Usually, the killer is the hazmat fee: 1 box of ammo often has the same hazmat fee as a full case of ammo. So place your orders accordingly.

(edit) I skimmed over the "secure gated property" piece. Likely handled in the same fashion as any other delivery.
Would/do they leave other packages at the gate?

Only time I had to send ID proof was through LAX in Kalifornia. Hated to do it, but it was a rush shipment before Dad went on an elk hunt in CO, and it was the only vendor who had his brand, bullet weight, etc. at the time.

Wherever they drop your packages off for non-ammo shipments is going to be the same place that they drop off your ammo. No signature or special considerations, outside of a hazmat sticker on the shipping box.

Also, there's no such thing as free shipping. They might say "free shipping," but be sure to compare total cost of the shipped order between vendors. More than a few times I've loaded my online cart with ammo from a "free shipping" vendor only to find that the same ammo was cheaper elsewhere with their shipping charge.

I've never had to pay hazmat for ammo. Is this something new or location specific? Only time hazmat has come in to play for me was powder and primers.

There is no Hazmat fee for loaded ammo. At least I've never paid one and If a company is charging a hazmat fee for ammo they are robbing you.

This might be a good time. It seems like prices have dropped some. Like you said, I don't think it will ever drop back to where it was before. Watch for sales. Occasionally Natzches will have free shipping on their on sale ammo and it is a pretty good buy.

Am I mistaken, or didn't the signature required stuff go by the wayside with the 'rona?

    .
It is still there. I had to digitally sign for one a month ago. Not sure if it was going to be dropped off anyway disregarding that requirement. During rona I was home for a delivery that said signature was needed. Delivery guy said "nah." Probably overwhelmed.

I bought a few bricks of Tac .22's from Norma. Free shipping, no signature.

I'm hoping the ammo competitive pricing keeps going forward. Can't help but notice the better and better ammo pricing from Palmetto in the daily deals emails.

Never say never, but I'm still avoiding giving Federal any of my money. That dumb-assed 30 caliber pistol ammo release debacle, durring a 9mm crazy priced scarcity has not been forgotten. I question Federal's customer understanding and loyalty. Primers are still 3 times the price, when you can find them. How many Federal small pistol primers are sitting idle in the 30 Super Carry cartridges that no one will buy? :dunno:

They would likely leave it in the same spot all your other home deliveries are left. I’ve never had a problem with ammo deliveries. Never had to sign for any in a long, long time.

Have your ammo delivered to your place of employment (if your company permits that sorta thing) business to business delivery cuts down on a lot a BS.
I ordered 2200 pounds of powder/projectiles/ brass/loaded ammo as part of club wide buy, because we have dock and a lift truck, the driver about soiled his under shorts when he asked what was in the skids.....

Hazmat fees are for primers, or powders specifically. Ammunition has no hazmat fee, though can get pricey by weight when shipping a lot. A company can easily ship out 40-60lbs if ammo for under $50, so most get you on shipping price by the quantity of boxes. Shop around cart totals after shipping before assuming the price per round is the best deal. Beware any sights that don’t accept credit cards, or don’t have a phone number you can call. Lots of scams out there.

The app “Wikiarms” is a great way to search current price per round. Many out of state companies don’t charge taxes either. Hence, the total after shipping and tax is the best way to compare price per round, not just the box price on their website.

Knock on wood, no issues with online ammunition orders. Never signed for a shipment, never paid hazmat.

I have been ordering online since 2012 or so.

I imagine the delivery guy might not be too happy with me cuz I tend to order in 1K round increments and that carton is kinda heavy.

Usually you can see them tentatively approach the gate and leave a sticker on the gate, sometimes they will put a sticker on the mail box.

we have been having a problem with Foxes lately so two of the LGD’s will have full run of the front as well. If they do not know you there is going to be a problem. We have a double gate at the front and the one closest to, the road is locked.

While that is a great idea, with out going into details unfortunately it’s not an option.

Yes there is no free lunch but if I can augment my stock for a reasonable price per round I am good with that. One of the vendors offered no additional charge shipping for orders over $150.00
