I feel the need to own a wheel gun. After research I want a 3” barrel .357 and have narrowed it down to 3 very different revolvers and would like to hear comments — preferably from those who have experience with these pistols. Will most likely be a range fun gun but may want to carry on special occasions (currently CC either a CZ PCR or Sig P365 and rarely my 1911). Will likely mostly shoot 38 special & +P but will want it to handle .357 loads with reasonable accuracy.

    So here are my thought:

Colt King Cobra 3”, (can be found for around $800 if one looks carefully—but what does the future hold for Colt CZ group, will these continue to be made?). Fits my hand well, feels good and the trigger is very smooth. Not too small or large and feels like it would handle a magnum load pretty well but have not had the opportunity to shoot one.

S&W 19-9 Comp Carry PC 3” (a little more $, have seen these go for around $900-1000 on GB, a half pound heavier than the Colt and trigger not as sweet). Little doubt this will handle magnum loads ok, wanting a stainless revolver but the alternative (combat magnum) is a bit over budget.

Ruger Sp101 3” (down to 5 shots, not as nice trigger as the other wheel guns but considerably less $$, 1 oz lighter than the Colt, built tough, and lots of aftermarket goodies available). These are the most available and least expensive by $200-300. Trigger can be smoothed out from what I hear (or put 1000 rounds or so down range). Holsters, speed loaders, etc probably the easiest to find at fair prices.

    So, lets hear it peoples!

I have a long time bias to SW revolvers. For me, a K-frame is one of the quintessential modern revolver along with a 686. The PC model gives you a nice factory upgrade though it still falls short of a true custom trigger job. I prefer the look of the older magna-port designs but we know what pre-lock prices have done!

The Colt is cool for being a Colt. I've had an original King Cobra that was nice - I just preferred a SW and sold it in 2019 before prices went sky high.

The Rugers have visually never been my thing but if anyone would ask me which 357 wheel to consider, the 101 would undoubtedly be on the list. The Ruger is probably going to the "softest" shooting of the three but anything with a 3" barrel has a brutal percussion with 357 mag. I had a SP101 for a second. Traded it to CM or sold it to him - don't recall exactly.

I would buy all three and 1500 rounds of 357 mag. After 500 through each - let us know which one was the keeper.

I too am biased towards S&W. I think a 3" K-frame is as close to perfection as God allows and have owned at least a dozen or more over the years. I have no experience with the current QC coming from the factory though. If however I was limited to a factory new 3" .357 I would look very hard at Kimber.

Here is an unconventional 4" option. When these first came out, I was turned off by the non-traditional look but then a fellow INGOer let me shoot his and I was impressed. This model is on my "when I win the lottery" list.

The Kimbers seem near unobtainium but would like to fondle ine some time soon.
