I love really good westerns, and I guess, some not so great westerns. The Man who Shot Liberty Valance. Tombstone. Winchester 73. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, directed by Sam Peckinpah, 3:10 to Yuma, True Grit, Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Open Range. But as far as I`m concerned, Unforgiven is THE BEST western EVER made. The casting was wonderful, the acting was masterful, the film production was incredible. And for all the wonderful, memorable lines in the film, one exchange sticks in my mind with an almost spiritual resonance:

The Schofield Kid : Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming. Will Munny : We all got it coming, kid.

Eastwood is rightfully a legend, and Unforgiven, in my mind, puts him at the top of an already crowded field as far as men who have directed and acted in them. I think I need to go, right now, and put on the Unforgiven DVD.

I gotta agree with you. Just watched Unforgiven again last week and it is still as good as the first time.

So Eastwood bought the rights in the early 1980's and waited until the early 1990's to make the movie. Maybe that is the reason the movie is so good. He waited until he dumped Sondra Locke so he didn't have to give her a role in the film. Although Sondra could have played Claudia Munny since being a dead, buried wife does not take a lot of acting skills.

The Outlaw Josey Wales is pretty much hard to beat.
Bounty hunter #1: A man's got to do something for a living these days. Josey Wales: Dyin' ain't much of a living, boy. Josey Wales: Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie? Josey Wales: Now remember, when things look bad and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean.

I have to agree....it is some of his best work.

There are so many story lines and subplots that all intertwine into an EXCELLENT piece of work.

Better half and I went to see it with some friends when it was first released. I remeber walking out and my buddy commented that he didn't like it....he said there was no "good guy"....everybody was flawed. I said, "yep...that's how life is...we are all flawed".

    Great movie.

To be certain, he draws heavily on many aspects of his earlier westerns like High Plains Drifter, Outlaw Josey Wales, and others.
