    The human species - smart enough to protect itself from external threats but not smart enough to protect itself from itself. We are our own worst enemy.

    I used to think that all we need is a good external threat to unify humanity in the cause of avoiding mass extinction like in the movie Armageddon. More recently however I have come to conclude that we would be obliterated before we even agreed whether or not there was actually a threat. I think the next disaster epic that Hollywood comes out with needs to explore all the various sides, including the fake news and the biased social media and the politicians posturing for power while the scientists are blue in the face warning of the impending doom. Then it becomes a kind of international arms race to see which nation can combat the threat first instead of pooling their collective information in resources.

    I know that's a little heavy for a feel good thread.
