Aug 15th is the opening day for squirrels in Indiana. Post your success, failures, recipes and everything else related to the hunt here.

I put a new scope on my $90 Savage 22lr. That will be my rifle this year. I still might take out the old Model 12 in 16 gauge too.

My daughter is looking forward to getting back out when it's not freezing this year, since we started so late last year.

Aug 15th was my mother's birthday. She grew up hating it because her birthday dinner would be rushed so my grand father could get out into the woods to hunt fuzzy tailed tree rats.

In my grandmothers later days I would supply the squirrels and she would fry them up with biscuits and gravy. I would clean them at home and bring them to her. She finally told me that if I didn't bring them with the heads on don't bother bringing them at all. Seems her whole family cherished the brains. I couldn't watch.

She told me of the time my great-great grandfather had shot a mess of squirrels and the kids (it was a large family) were complaining about there not being enough heads for everyone. My g-g-grandfather picked her up on his lap and told her, "Don't cry, the heads have the tongue in them and that is what he uses to lick his a$$..."

She had never told me before that my g-g-grandfather was a Psychologist...

    LOL.
We've never eaten the heads but heard a lot of stories about people who do. That's one of the better ones.

I am old, back in the day before deer and turkey were reintroduced to central Indiana squirrel hunting was the only game that required some skill, not just jump shooting. For me August 15 was a much awaited date. Enjoy and good luck.
No deer, turkey, etc. when I grew up either. Just LOVED squirrel hunting...nothing like sitting quiet in the woods at daybreak as all of nature wakes up for another day. Now during retirement have literally dozens of squirrels running around me. Am really tempted to “hunt” a few except I really don’t want to clean them and my wife says she won’t cook them.

Best of luck this season to BT & daughter !

Side note: as I type this had to let the dogs out to chase about 30 turkeys out of my yard. Maybe I should take up hunting them.

First year not living 20 min from the woods anymore. :( Still planning on at least a few early mornings to drive out.

    What product do you recommend?

Anything with Permethryn, I use Bonide Termite and Carpenter Ant killer from TSC and reduce it with water at a 20-1 ratio. It's a concentrate and will cost a lot less than regular spray cans like Permanone. The active material is the same.

Here in the GSF we would all have been sucked dry like mummies from ticks without it.

Seen my dad eat many squirrel brains, I tried it a couple of times many, many years ago, seemed like a lot of work for a taste. My grandkids are old enough now to get out and hunt by themselves so I don’t need to get out much now.
I am waiting on October 1st that is when the fun starts.:rockwoot:

And for anyone that wants it premixed and more expensive, there is Sawyer's. Been using it for years with great results.

We use to have a bunch of fox squirrels and some were big and fat. I haven't seen more than a few this year on property. I wonder if they died off. Gray squirrels are much more abundant this year. So I won't be hunting fox squirrels this year.
