    My version of this involves progressively larger cheater bars.

    When my older son was something like 10, I was doing a front hub job on my old Grand Am.

    The first time: "Go out to the shed and get that big pipe that's about 6 feet long."

    The next time (the other hub): "Go get Bessie." (you give nicknames to things that are important to you)

    A year later because I used a cheap Autozone hub: I just gave the look and he knew enough to get Bessie...without words.

    Why not have both? I'll bet Bessie could fit on the end of the ratchet handle.

    If you're using a cheater pipe, you should use a breaker bar instead of a ratchet. That way you won't take a chance on breaking a ratchet.
    Sure. But I was thinking we're going for full on "rural engineering" here. You use what you have handy unless your gopher kid is nearby to fetch what you want.
