Only idiots smoke in their car. Same with people that drink. Throwing a single blanket on all pot smokers because you only run into the stupid ones is not acceptable.
Thats what happens when those are your poster children.

I firmly believe that MJ will become somewhat legalized federally within the next 10 years (probably sooner). I say "somewhat legalized" because I am sure there will still be all kinds of rules (minimum age for possession, rules regarding distribution and tracking, etc).
Indiana will go for MJ about one or two elections after KY legalizes. Once lawmakers in IN see all the tax dollars flowing to KY, they will get grouchy/greedy and start reaching out for their piece.
It is coming. Some alcoholics will not like it because they enjoy their addictions's privileged postilion in our society (I know some alchies who honestly and openly state that "I might be a drunk, but at least I'm not a pot head").
Taking that rung of social status away from Alchies will not be popular, but who cares (other than the alcoholics who are afraid of being pushed even farther down in social hierarchy).
I believe Michigan is getting close to rec weed. They may be the shot in the arm IN needs as you said when all the millions of tax dollars roll in.
I've met a lot of people in my career with my current employer who smoke pot and you would never know it. Some even baffled me completely when I found out. Most of the people I'm talking about are not only bright but also well-esteemed in society. Growing up I had a lot of friends who were daily tokers, some failed everything and others were just as successful in school as I was. My point is that I don't think weed is any worse than any other vice and I'd hazard a guess that it's better than a lot of them.
Biggest issue I have with this is in the workplace. I could spot the drunk impaired employee and send them home or get rid of them. Stoners just make stupid mistakes and aren't as easy to pick out.
I worked in electronics for a stint years ago. Some of the sharpest young geniuses anyone ever met were worthless after lunch break.
We have a huge problem in this country with the acceptance of chemically altering people's mental status. We need no further and we need to shame the common practice of what is already legal.
I do not want a pothead on the road, running a train, in the factory running production, or writing legals briefs. No one is working at their best, or performing safely, after having a smoke or a laced brownie. No one. Same problem with alcohol. I do not want either one legal just to keep my world safer than it already is.
On the other hand, Prohibition made Capone a national idol and gave the mafia a huge advantage in controlling local price forces and governments. Can you say St. Valentine's Day Massacre? Bottom line, you can't ban it effectively. Banishment will simply give the mobs a great new product and a great new eager market.
Therefore, legalize the cursed stuff and let the idiots fry their brains at their leisure. Tax it to a free-thee-well and use the cash to pay down the national debt. We will be debt free in less than a decade. Require any and all who purchase it to sign a waiver forfeiting all health care at government expense. If they want to destroy their bodies, their call; it is a free country; but do not expect the government to pick up the pieces and give you free health care.
At the same time, legalize suicide. When you booze (smoke), you loose. When you realize how stupid you have been, do us all a favor and check yourself out.
If someone wants to play the fool, let'em. Just do not give them a chance to damage the wiser folks who are committed to taking care of business and providing for their children.
