just as the title says. anybody want to school me on sharpening. i got a smith and lansky kit and they do good on regular blades. but i have the knives of alaska light hunter and i just cant get it sharp no matter how hard i try. i also have another blade like it that has that round curve deep belly blade good for skinning but i just can't get them sharp. i am willing to meet and bring knives and my kit or pay for some supplies. i would also like to learn convex edge sharpening though i have no blades w/ that edge. i watch all these video's online and i still can't get it together.

i have strange days off but i am sure we could work something out. i am up towards noblesville area but work for the police dept in indy from 2-10 so if we could set it up for the morning i could meet there.

I'd be more than happy to sharpen them for you but I'm in bloomington so... If it were possible for me to come up or you come down I would gladly put something on for people.

I was thinking about this exact thing a few days ago. I can get a knife sharp, but not *crazy* sharp. I'd like to learn some tricks and tips.

well "crazy" sharp is different for everyone so I need some expectations of sharpness. highly polished and hairs jump off your arm just being near the knife or toothy edges with bite, etc.

hands down the BEST "kit" is the edge pro but most people on here don't like spending $50 on a knife let alone $200 on the bare bones edge pro. for casual users and people with not a lot of knives the sharpmaker is really great. of course you can always get a selection of stones to freehand, but for most this is too time and labor intensive couple with that the exactness you need. but really with todays kits there is no need to freehand on stones. if you want to convex the fastest and easiest way to do it is a belt sander.

Well I have a "knack" for sharping knifes. I have never met a knife I could not sharp (as long as it wasn't make in Pakistan). I would be more that happy to meet and set up a small class if need be after the holidays. I have the lansky outfit but don't care for it and use it very little. I use a regular stone and honeing oil for the most part and that is what I would teach using. Send me pm if you might be interested and of course no charge for it.

I do ok with a whetstone too and I wouldn't mind sharing the knowledge. It's about an hour's drive for me to get to Indy but if you set it up well in advace I'd be happy to come.

The reponses tell me that you guys should have some kind of open house get together like the guys do with AR building. Why not schedule an afternoon and all get together and all of the sharpeners can demo their gear and their techniques? The could demo on the knives of people who are wanting to learn, so there would be both an exchange of information as well as getting some knives sharpened.

Ideally you could have people showing the correct way to use a Sharpmaker or similar crock sticks, Lansky and similar systems, as well as some demos of traditional methods using stones and stropping. You could also demo water stones vs. oil stones vs. ceramics vs. diamond abrasives.

    The possibilities are many.

I'm always down to to do this type of thing, timing is the only issue with me. unless it's in bloomington then pretty much anytime is good.

I was thinking about hosing some show and tells through out the cold weeks. Quick notice if you can come, if not don't; 10or 12 folks, different topics including the knife class. Bringing in different experts in each field. I can host the knife class at a fire house community room, but probably not an AR show and tell :D
