Good times. The only advice I give anyone joining the military is to embrace the times that such the most because once you are out they will become your best memories.

I think I just leaked a little bit of awesome there after reading that article.

I have aver only been retired four years, but I remember every bit of it like it was yesterday.

Yeah, but that's looking back. Looking at the world with 19 or 20 year old eyes, it's a wonder we lived through some of our bad choices.

My experience with squids on a Navy base is that their arms are broken and a salute is a foreign concept to them. And, it's not "by your leave", it's "Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening SIR"......as least when they are addressing me.

It's always cooler in hindsight. Wouldn't trade my time for any amount of money. :-)

I think you remember the good times and the bad times fade with time. When I retired I'd spent over half my life on active duty. You don't just leave that behind.

There is definitely a bond. Korea is the place where I've seen this bond to be strongest. I remember talking to several Senior NCOs, all of us had been stationed in the ROK at one time or another. It doesn't matter what decade or which base, you can talk about being in Korea.

And that old guy who sold mink blankets in Songton (outside the gate at Osan AB)?? The one who always wore a coat and would yell, "HEY GI, YOU WANT MINK BLANKET!!??" As far as I can tell he was there when the 51st Fighter Wing was flying F-86 Sabres. He was like 102 when I was there in 1993 and is probably still there today.

Mar '92 - Mar '93, Camp Hovey, lived in an H Frame Relocatable. Nothing like living on a vinyl tile covered concrete slab with radiator heat through the S Korean winter.

Unfortunately I can't talk too much about my year there. I was told when I arrived in country that there were basically two options available, getting drunk or getting saved. I chose the former and don't remember much of that year thanks to OB and Soju lol.

I bet I ran the soles off of 10 pair of fake Nike running shoes that year.
