With all this ill-timed weather messing up local matches and using Owensboro as an alternate, I feel like it's pushing me into USPSA even more!

Sorry I miss Red Brush Saturday. I hope everyone had a great time.

    Arts & crafts again?

I had fun & hope other folks did.
No excitement this time, except we had movement parallel to the 180 line inside the house and I was surprised that not everyone had the 180 degree concept down. Seemed like keeping the gun pointed down range is something folks would know regardless of IDPA, assuming that they had ever shot at a range or had any guidance on gun safety. Not surprised that it can be difficult to follow the rule (I've had my issues :( ), just that the rule had to be explained.

Will be out of town Saturday, if you are going to do another 23 round match this year then now would be a good time!!

Absolutely had fun. Weather was fantastic, range was much drier then anyone had anticipated.

Uh, I'm here to tell you that no, not everyone understands the concept of "keeping it downrange." I mean, when it has to be explained what 180 degrees is.......

This weeks stage design in the house did NOT help matters.

+1 to all points. I would have never guessed we were going to be able to shoot at RB after the downpour from Friday.

House has always been a mixed bag. A lot of fun but with a wide range of skill levels the house can be a nightmare to shoot and SO. Kudos to those that design and set them up but more consideration has to be given during the design and set-up phases for the new-shooter and how intimidating it already is to be out there. You couple being new, adrenalin and a great opportunity to get turned around and we are the next ones with a YouTube video up.

I don't disagree with anything, but I wonder about the other side of this one.
If you are going to shoot many matches you are going to run into some 180 traps, and some stages where cones are set and the 180 is more like maybe a 130 (not a bad idea for me to use cones or something on the lake stage come to think of it). Even without 180 traps sometimes a shooter will move in a direction you didn't anticipate (maybe coming back to a target they overlooked for example) and might bust the 180.
People (me included) need to learn to keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction regardless of what is going on when they are shooting, none of the familiar faces that I ran on the house stage came close to any gun handling issues so somehow training has happened. There is a case to be made that I should have anticipated the new folks issues and strongly cautioned folks during the walk through & left the stage as is.

I agree with your case; if people are going to compete and handle a weapon they damn better well know how to do it properly. There is a fine line to be walked somewhere between a constant coddling & hand-holding and the 'oh well you should have known better' schools of thought. I look at Red Brush and WSSC as a home for experienced shooters but also a fertile field where brand new shooters are grown. If they are going to expand out and get involved in the larger matches they'd better get used to doing things outside their comfort zone and they best shape up on their 4 Rules and their abilities to handle and manipulate their weapon safely. But I can't help but think that we have a responsibility to help usher those brand new to the sport into it properly without overwhelming them.

There probably isn't a perfect way but I still think you can run the tighter stages like that and not push it to 179.9999 degrees on some shots. You are right in saying the familiar faces are probably not going to do it unless something catastrophic happens like a slip and fall or something of that nature. We do know better and we've done it for a while, but with us inviting in people new to the sport, completely green, I think we have a duty to keep the house and some of the stages simpler in the respects of the 180 types of things. I'd never recommend a new shooter with a few matches under their belts head to Lewisport for some USPSA fun despite them being very safe and having squads full of experienced people. too much going on too quickly.

I'll go on record as saying the house stages are fun, challenging and there isn't really anything I'd officially say is unsafe about them. But my concern is always turned toward the SO and the new shooter. Just my $0.02

My first 2-3 or 4 times I ran the house stage as a beginner. My brain was on major dazed and confused overload each time. I'm lucky that Matt V didn't jam his lit cigar into my ear for the goofs I surely made those first runs.

    To all

The weather is looking beautiful for shooting. Not to hot or cold. To protect some areas we will park on the hill east of the cowboy town entering between the red cones.

Perfect day yesterday at WSSC. Didn't get to use the pistol I had intended to use (couldn't find a holster) but still had fun. Thanks to MD & SO's for a great match!

Excellent day out yesterday with the gang, good times aplenty. My new .40 ran pretty well, so I can't complain there either. :yesway:

On an off-note, wtf is up with prices of Hornady shell plates? They've gone from ~$22 to $30-40 each in just a couple months... :xmad:
