Is it too early to ask what happened? Fox59 just announed Major Davis, Jr. was walking away from the police when the fight started.

    Seems odd to me.

Of course he was just peacefully walking away. You know how those damned Russkie guns backfire without warning!

I'm in an investigative unit that deals with 90% violent felony warrant service and 10% surveillance, and was provided with a decent tactical/raid vest carrier and a shotgun. Thanks to another INGO member, I've purchased my own rifle plates. I've also had to purchase my own IFAK(s) and tourniquets and the associated training, and am able to use my own AR after being approved by the department. I have a helmet, although it could use a new retention harness. In sum, I use these items maybe 15-20% of the time.

With all that being said, departments are slow to train, and are often quick to over-react to the usage of equipment that is deemed too militant or scary. All of it has its place, and our guys use it accordingly. Most coppers know this and will spend good, hard-earned money to buy the equipment they need to get the job done.

I rarely come on INGO anymore, because prior to this weekend, so many times I logged on and saw the division between LE and everyone growing, with more cynicism and "us VS. them" sentiment growing each day. This murder of Officer Renn stands as the perfect example of contemporary law enforcement: A regular joe patrolman with average years of service and a solid, professional reputation that was simply doing his job, responding to a very routine call for service. He was murdered for simply being a police officer in a segment of society that cares not about humanity or consequences or rule of law. This is the vast majority of law enforcement officers across the country, the "Thin Blue Line" of brotherhood that exists to support each other in times like these.

Thank you all for the kind words of support for IMPD and our local emergency responders. As this discussion grows, please remember that those of us in law enforcement who are members here are always on your side, and are always here for you. I applaud the generosity of members here who want to help financially with equipment or other needs, since many of us can't afford needed equipment. Above all, please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers, as another kind word never hurts and only provides more armor than our vests can cover.

Thank you for your service Jamie! I think a lot more people are pro police then against you. Times like this prove it. There are a lot of really brave people behind a keyboard. I'd venture to say that most are speaking bad about the LEO's just to see the negative responses. Some feed on that crap. I have known people like that. the key word is "known" I am a positive person. I don't have much use for certain kinds of negativity.

RIP Officer Renn. It makes me quite sad to hear of these events. Guy just out doing his job, trying to earn a living, and is murdered for it. Senseless. Just blows my mind that something like this can happen.

What at is interesting is how the suspect was brought back to life. Lots of reports of him being dead changed to critical. I guess those folks as Eskanzi are good at their jobs.

They attempted to speak to him and he would not take his hands out of his pockets after repeated orders to do so. He walked quickly into his yard, picked up the rifle and started shooting.

The WISH-TV interviews with the shooter's family members absolutely infuriate me. I'm so ****ing mad I'd better just back away from my keyboard before I write something I will regret later.

    To whom it may concern,

As a citizen of the City of Indianapolis, I have found myself mourning the loss of one of our police officers for the second time in less than a year. I found your story featuring Major Davis' family to be in extremely poor taste. In fact, it is disgusting and disrespectful not only to the family of Officer Renn, but to all the good citizens of this city. I am in shock that WISH TV would come up with this story, let alone publish it. No matter how you slice it, Major Davis was a convicted felon who used an illegally possessed firearm to murder a police officer. Nobody wants to hear his family's opinion on how he is a "good boy" and made a "mistake" and how it's the Officer's own fault that he got murdered. Davis murdered a police officer. He embodies the root of all crime in this city. Entitlement, lack of responsibility, lack of respect, lack of education, all these qualities are that of a career criminal, not an upstanding citizen. WISH TV should be ashamed to have published such a piece and I believe that you owe an apology to Officer Renn's family and to the citizens of the City of Indianapolis. I am truly disappointed in WISH TV.

I think I met Officer Renn once some time ago, may he rest in peace. The local rag here is saying the defendant's only conviction was misdemeanor weed. What was his felony conviction?

I would say that the number of officers that have purchased their own is pretty low.

I was lucky and found a complete set on here. I sold one plate to one of my county buddy's. I keep a outer plate carrier with side plates behind my seat. I am not going to wear the thing all of the time. We are already accused of being militarized enough as it is. Besides we have a pretty low crime rate. In this county major felons go away for a long time, just what Marion county needs.
