I don't know squat about knives. I've never owned a quality knife, but I'd like to purchase one that I can carry every day that can be used for self defense and also camping, etc.

I'd like to spend less than $100 if possible and buy it in a brick and mortar store so I can look at it ahead of time. Down here in Evansville that would probably mean purchasing it from Dick's or Gander Mountain. Maybe Walmart.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

Mike billman at Grindestone cutlery could help you out if you made the trip to fort wayne.
bur for self defense and camping I'd look to Ebay, look at spyderco something fully or partialy serrated, I like the delicas, ( thinner then most others) enduras are great knives and with the wave feature fast to deploy. A fellow INGO member likes the natives from spyderco, as they give a better feeling handle. The spyderco line of Bryd knives are all teh quality but cheaper steel ( think Acura and honda two of the same really) A hundred dollars limits options if you hunt Ebay for a while you may be able to pick up a spyderco millatary, or para millitay ith S30V blades for under a hundred dollars.

I recently picked up a Kershaw Junk yard II Review Just got a new Kershaw Junk Yard Dog II with composite blade - BladeForums.com
and really enjoy it. I am partial to spyderco,. but if you can get a benchmade for under a hundred dollars I wouldn't hesitate.

Other guys liek teh CRKT folders, and while they do work, and are tough enough, I don't care for them ( preference, nothing to take away from the way they work)

The new line of Victornox pocket knives especialy the one hand open locking bladed version may also fit the bill.

Sorry to threadjack, but where is Grindestone located now? I bought from them several years ago when they were located in Glenbrook, but I had thought they closed down when I didn't find their store there.

Back to the topic. If you're willing to spend up to $100, you should look at Spyderco (you won't find them at Walmart, or Dick's). Gander Mountain may have them, although the Evansville store isn't listed as a Spyderco dealer. There are Spyderco dealers listed in Terre Haute and Louisville. I also have a Kershaw that has served me well for 7 years and counting. My Spydercos have held an edge the longest, but the Kershaw is also a quality knife.

I am a Benchmade nuts, I'm on my 3rd. The SOG Trident is also a great knife, it was my last daily carry knife but I lost it, or it grew legs and walked away (it happens). They are only like $70 or $80 and have an assisted open.

For your posted requirements I would go with a plain edge or combo edge as far as use and upkeep and remember recurve blades look cool and cut great but add some learning curve to the sharpening and upkeep side of things.

Things to think about, Weight, side carry or pocket, a tactical knife must function as a tool, and a weapon. Quality is of upmost importance when choosing a tactical knife. There are many types of blade and handle materials to choose from for your knife, so you should consider how frequently you want to sharpen your knife, and how much abuse you'll subject your tactical knife to. Tactical knives also come with different edge configurations, such as straight edge, serrated, double edge, and any combination of the three.
Write down what you expect from your future knife and then look for those functions and quality. Remember, you pay for what you get and get what you pay for. In a world of compromise, some men don't!!
    Good Luck

    This.

I've been very happy with my waved Endura from Spyderco, and you can certainly find one in your price range.

Bought a CRTK Model M60 SOTFB a few months ago off Ebay and couldn't be happier. Brand in the box with sheath (even has pocket for DMT sharpener) and shipping it came to me UNDER $50.00! Black blade has a teriffic edge. Part serrated, part plain 4" blade. Made in Tawain, but don't let that fool you. Just stay away from the Chinese ones.

I've also got a Buck 110 that is a good knife, but it feels like a toy next to the CRTK.

Once you settled on a particular knife, check Ebay out. There are some good deals there as long as you are carefull and don't get emotional involved.

Did you take any part in the destruction of some of the red scorpion six knives? I am way more into folders, but the Chris reeves scream at me when I walk by, so do some of the bark river and Fallkniven blades,

Hard to beat his selection of Swiss army knives and the amount of busse blades that temporarily reside at his shop.

Use this great thing we have called the internet. Find some knives you like and seek them out. There are a lot of different varieties out there that will probably work for you. You just have to find one. Ask questions, farmers, firefighters, tradesman, hunters see what they have to say. Just please don't go to Wal-Mart.:)
