    Dear Colleagues,

We have a small group of students who have indicated that from April 8 – 14, 2013 they intend to enact their constitutional right to express themselves. The nature of their expression will be to wear an “empty gun holster” in plain view. These students are members of the national organization of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC).

While we are supportive of the students right to express themselves, this should not be construed as support or endorsement for their position on gun laws or policies on university/college campuses. There is however an important responsibility to inform our campus community of this demonstration/protest in order to minimize any disruption to the teaching, learning, or research of the campus.

A safe and secure environment is a fundamental prerequisite for fulfilling the University mission of teaching, research, and public service. The University is committed to maintaining a community that is free of violence. This obligation includes eliminating recognized hazards from campus communities that contribute to violence or serious harm. The decision to prohibit weapons (except in the hands of trained law enforcement personnel) on campus makes the IUPUI community a safer place.

Once again while we are supportive of the students right to express themselves, the University does not support or endorse the views of the SCCC or the students that are participating in the Empty Holster Protest. In the past (2008 – 2010) when this protest has occurred on campus there have been no incidents reported.

The following is a statement that describes the students’ intended protest. Please know that the Office of the Dean of Students and the University Police are available to meet with faculty, staff, or students regarding how best to engage this matter.

    National Empty Holster Protest

During the week of April 8 – 14, 2013, IUPUI students will be participating in the national empty holster protest. These students are members of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus at IUPUI and will wear EMPTY holsters across campus and to classes in order to peacefully protest campus policies that prevent students from legally carrying weapons on campus in order to protect themselves. There will be nothing in the holsters, and participating students have been asked to use their best judgment in dealing with other students, staff, and faculty.

The holsters that students will be wearing will be EMPTY and fully visible. Protesters will go about their daily activities and should not create any unnecessary disturbance. Please be advised that do not intend to pose any threat to campus safety and are not carrying weapons.

If you want more information regarding this symbolic protest or interested in participating, please contact Dustin Kidd at scccatiupui@yahoo.com. You can also visit Students for Concealed Carry for more information.

weenie president. Does he always send out a letter for every single protest going on on the campus to notify people that it does not represent the "official view" of the campus?

It appears he's never heard of the Babara Streisand principle

Gun-free campuses are shooting galleries for bad guys. Eliminating the 2nd amendment rights of college students while on campus is treason.

    Easy enough.

Sent an e-mail to Spratt (since I'm also an IU AND Purdue Alumni) demanding to see copies of the letters and / or e-mails he sent out to the 'colleagues" when they had a protest about ANYTHING else with which the university, OR him personally, disagreed.

'Cause he'd better have something similar for something OTHER than empty holsters, since those campuses tend to limit speech and 'protests' on many subjects.

Amazing, these guys make their living off of our tax dollars, which to me makes them public servants, who are required to uphold the law, even when they may not agree with it. I fail to see in the constitution, where my second ammendment rights end at a university campus.

A policy that was a stunning success at making Columbine, Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hook "safer" (sic) places...

I went to IUPUI for about a year - didn't graduate [decided I'd just work for myself instead of getting some piece of paper from a university allowing me to work for somebody else].

I wonder what they would do if a non-student was on campus, it is public property, no?

I mean, you're legal if you have your LTCH... Just wondering what [if anything] they could do?

Why designate a particular week to do this? I would do the empty holster thing often and randomly. If all those supporting carry on campus did that they would have to ban holsters, too. When holsters are banned find something else disruptively pro-2A to wear. Rinse and repeat.

Or put a cross or a rainbow flag on those holsters. Keep things stirred up.

Saw on Fox News Network last night that Watters was down on the beach for spring break and was asking how liberal their particular college was....seems 98% of the people he asked said that their professors/college administrators tended to be more liberal then conservative, and one guy even said that some of them are so liberal, they cant stand having conservatives in the classroom.

Not that I'm at all surprised by this information. Colleges have been a breading ground for liberals since the 60's. My thought on CC on colleges is this....if this university president just happened to be in a classroom when a "deranged gunman" entered his college and started using his gun free zone as a live subject target range, would he change his mind on CC if he realized that it takes 7-12 minutes for an armed response from the police? Im thinking these presidents never stray further from their offices than need be for just that type of emergency, and if this gunman just happened to get into their office, Im sure their thinking is that they will shoot the receptionist before they get to them. Im also betting that if there was someone with a CC weapon there in the classroom that stopped the killing spree, that the university president would not only NOT acknowledge the positive presence of a weapon, but try to expel that person, even after they saved their sorry butts.

    Just my two cents

The hypocricy here is just staggering. Two statements highlighted above. Constitutional right to express themselves? They're really going to say they support constitutional rights when what they are protesting is the University's denial of the very next enumerated right?
