The diesel is sweet. Too bad they jacked up our emission standards and killed it's fuel milage

    BMW X5.
You can get the smaller engine or the larger engine, enough room for a few adults, enough room to haul stuff...

It will hold up over time, many options.
(I buy used, would not buy a new BMW as the price is to high)

Nothing takes a hit driving it off the lot like a beamer. Only buy one if you can afford to fix it or work on it yourself. The X5 is a sweet ride.

    LOL

Wife and I are in the market for a newer SUV. Something nice that can be used as a comfortable, safe, 4x4 family vehicle.

Figured it would be smart to get one before we have a family of our own.

Find the oldest highest mileage Lexus RX you can and test drive it. It will amaze you how well they hold up. Like a BMW I wouldn't buy a new one but their CPO cars come with great warranties and generally come from people who took excellent care of them. :twocents:

Well, I rather like my current 4-Runner, but my heart belongs to my old International Scouts. I owned 2 over the years and they were better than anything I've owned since. They were built right (except for the rusting part) and tough and were more than comfortable enough. Drove mine into the ground. Wish they'd bring them back, with the same features and engines.

    Lovemachine,

What size SUV are you thinking on moving towards?! It would help to narrow the choices down...

My Wife currently has a Jeep JK, we like it. We also have an 03 Ford Escape, it has been a great small SUV. We are currently contemplating moving towards a Ford Excursion...

    Size wise, I dunno yet.

We've started looking at the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford edge and escape, GMC Acadia.

Land Rover. Discovery II, LR3, Defender.

    The best 4 X 4 X Far.

As a former owner of a LR110, 95 Disco and 04 Disco, I can say "yes, they will go anywhere you want BUT, they are very expensive and labor intensive to keep on the road". Lots of headaches. Frankly, I would never recommend a Land Rover to anyone you care about.

Remember, "friends don't let friends drive British cars".

If it was built between the 70's and early 90's, is full size with 2 doors, then I'm a fan. Had an '86 GMC Jimmy that I miss dearly and currently own a '96 2dr Tahoe. If only GM would pull their heads out of their rear ends and build a new 2dr with the current body style I would own one.

I'm digging the 2013 Ford Escape. Partially biased since I own a '12 Focus. My mom has a Chevy Equinox she really likes. Sister in law has a CR-V that I don't care for.

well. aside from the kia sportage, my Land rover has served me quite well in the past few years. proper maintenance and 92+ octane fuel keeps it going strong. as long as you dont mind the oil slick that any land rover is bound to leave behind. :runaway:

Well, we have a Pontiac G6 now. It has great MPG. I know we'll lose a lot going to a SUV.

So, I'd want something that gets more than 13 MPG...

Might want to give that Grand Cherokee a closer look***,I know I am Jeep biased but, the new pentastar motor tranny in our'12 Wrangler do pretty good for mileage.

I am thinking the Grand is "best in class" for that mpg thing....one question will this vehicle ever be used "off road"?

It would save a lot opinions if you don't need that ability......

I highly doubt we'd see a Diesel in a non heavy duty SUV; the 2008 regulations killed that.

    BMW offers X5
MB offers the large GL and the midsize ML now, they bringing over a really small GLK diesel for '13
    VW offers the midsize Touareg
Audi offers the midsize Q7 and announced a smaller unit for '13 or '14
Jeep announced a common rail diesel for '13 in the midsize Grand Cherokee

Sadly we can't find an American SUV with a diesel engine of any size.
