No I don't. But I hope to understand what I'm getting into before I get there. I think most people wait until they are already knee deep in diapers before the do some reading about raising kids. I want a head start.
You can read all the books and forums in the world, and I guarantee that it'll be worth diddly and squat once you finally get to that whole "parenting" thing. The best advice Lars and I got when we became parents last year? "You'll get advice from everyone, requested or not. Unless they've done it in the last six months, their advice is probably worthless, including mine." Baby advice changes about as frequently as computers. Once a year has gone by, the hardware and/or software is outdated and unsupported. :)

I guess what I'm saying is you won't truly understand it until you ARE there, not BEFORE you get there. Like 88GT said, the BF vs. FF debate is more fierce than the OC vs. CC debate here. :):

I posted this thread because I thought a good part of INGOers would like to know that they are breaking the rules by bonding with their kids.
You and I apparently read two different links. What I read was an article warning people of dangerous sleeping habits. And honestly...I'm sure there are many young or new parents that were not aware of the dangers.

Yet...as usual...you see a conspiracy behind it.

I think the majority of INGO knows why you posted the thread. :drama: SSDD

How many kids would it take to make my opinion any more relevant?
I'd say at least one. Until then you don't know your

But thank God...the one man crusade against government is there to protect us from it. :): I'm just not sure which will do more harm.

Like anything else...do research and become enlightened. Don't take anything the government or the internet crusaders tell you as the Gospel. Make informed, educated decisions. You'll be all the better for it.

    Carry on.

Stop with the inflammatory BS, please.

How many kids would it take to make my opinion any more relevant? I still wouldn't be an expert unless I put on my white coat and stethoscope.
    One is a good start.

The fact that you think parenting actually has an "expert" level of knowledge just goes to illustrate how much you don't know. ;)

I made a deal with the kids early on. I don't sleep in their play pen, they don't sleep in mine.

My second one was born less than a year after the first one.

Conspiracy? Maybe a controversy? Even the headline of the article says that people are at odds with the doctors. That told me there must be two valid sides to the argument, neither being 100% wrong or right. I tend to be skeptic when it comes to experts & their opinions. If it stirs up a good debate, then that makes INGO that much more enjoyable.

    My 2 cents,

IM not going to look up statistics but I guarantee babies die more lying on their stomachs then they do on their backs, and there is scientific reasoning to back this up

The chance of a baby dying, while sleeping in on their parents "body contouring" mattress is higher than on the rock hard mattress designed for babies again scientific reasoning to back this up.

Yer wrong, a little bit, there.

Some things don't change, making babies is one, raising babies right is another. Wrong is wrong and if it was wrong a hundred years ago it's probably still wrong today.

Places to seek advice on raising children ranging from worst to best is about the same as anything else.

    Worst...

some one who's never done it.

some one who's never done it successfully.

some one who wrote a book about it once.

some one who read a book or newspaper article about it.

some one trying to do it.

    some one who's done it.

some one who's done it successfully.

some one who YOU KNOW HAS DONE IT SUCCESSFULLY.

some one who you know has done it successfully with the results you would like to accomplish or imitate.

some one who you know has done it successfully several times with the results you would like to accomplish or imitate.

some one who you know has done it successfully several times with the results you would like to accomplish or imitate and has advised others who were successful in the same way.

It should be against the law, for the child's safety of course.

    No it shouldn't.

Only law I'd support concerning government intervention concerning child rearing would be a requirement of any one offering advice public or private, written or oral, should be required to recite their own personal record of expirience and success record. This is to be recited in the same format as the advice is given and repeated both prior and after.

My name is Jack Ryan I have two children, male and female, ages 25-26. 2 success from conception to graduation high school, college, and fully employed. No failures. I got 'em started right at conception and the wife took over from there.

    Oh please...

In your opinion...are there two valid sides to this headline?

    How about this one?

Doctors urge early HPV vaccination for girls - INQUIRER.net, Philippine News for Filipinos

I hear many people are at odds with doctors concerning them. Because of this...there must be two valid sides...right?

Anyone that would condemn these vaccines when there are two valid sides to the argument might be...wrong...right?

Again folks...informed, educated choices. Discount what the fanatics on both sides have to say. :twocents:

Yeah? The libs are at odds with the Constitution. Does that give them any validity?

    Sometimes. On some issues.

Sometimes Conservatives are at odds with the Constitution too. Those are the battles that make INGO famous. Like 5 minutes ago I posted a poll asking if anyone would vote for martial law. I already got a nibble.

However, parenting isn't an exact science and there are no cut and dry answers. Some say keep the kids in a crib in their own room for safety and to develop independence. Others say keep the baby nearby for bonding, easy monitoring, and safety. I think both sides have good points, and both sides have raised healthy children. I respect both sides.

Ok, lets talk vaccines. Of course there are two valid sides to the vaccine debate. Informed choices for all, right? There are believers and there are non-believers. I wouldn't take away your right to vaccinate. If you think a shot will bring you health, then it's your body. If the chance of avoiding the flu is worth the risk of brain damage and death, then get the flu shot, every winter, for the rest of your life.

Then there are these wack jobs who go around asking why people still get sick if they have had all their shots, and have the nerve to speak out about their own family members getting screwed up from vaccines. Clearly these people should have their heads checked, and probably should be given some booster shots to teach them a lesson.

The vaccine debate is a little different than the crib debate, because one side isn't propping up a multi-billion dollar industry.

Personally, I had my concerns about co-sleeping. Wife convinced me otherwise. It worked out well with three children. That's the totality of my data sample. We don't drink, do drugs, and the one time I had to take nyquil - I slept on the couch so our risk factors weren't as high as others I presume.

The fact is, we are only having this argument because we have gotten very good at keeping small babies alive and we should all thank those dang scientists for it. However, we are now working on smaller and smaller sized groups to save and the question eventually becomes, "Can we save them all?" as well as, "What are we willing to sacrifice under the hope of saving them all?"

Some simply do not believe that we can save them all and so are less willing to sacrifice tangible benefits to get there. Others think we can save many more, if not all, and see the sacrifice as not that great.

But the one good thing is we are talking comparatively small numbers to 200+ years ago and most of us will not have to experience burying 40%+ of our babies as a normal life experience.

Thank God. Thank Science. Sleep well.
