Well I finally finished the licensing process today at GPD. After applying online and using the L1 option (fingerprinting and fees) I took the $50 local fee and three stamps to the gentleman sitting in the lobby. He took care of everything and gave me my receipt. He told me I should receive my license in 13 weeks!!! WTH!!!

Got a call from GPD today. Seems the Chief was not satisfied with the results that L1 obtained. He said another person with the same name and a very long rap sheet has similar prints. Now I have to go GPD to get fingerprinted again. I hope I don't have to pay them.

wow my post didnt go through...now to retype it..

ok, so. back to 15 pages ago. in regards to:
    IC 35-47-2-6
    (b) The period during which an application for the renewal of an existing license may be filed begins three hundred sixty-five (365) days before the expiration of the existing license. If the application for renewal of an existing license is filed within thirty (30) days of its expiration, the existing license is automatically extended until the application for renewal is passed upon.
I turned in my App 9-10 weeks ago. It'll probably come soon, but soon doesnt cut it when my current license expires TODAY :(
I have the receipt but still...the Code says filed within 30 days..i filed before that...i know somebody got an email from ISP saying even though they filed before that they are still ok but, idk, that doesnt really settle me on the matter.. i guess i could just not carry

    3 working days

Well I did it all on the 13th(Fri) at the Sheriffs office then to L1 and was done in about an hour(both places). Today(17th) I got my permit, so it was 3 working days :yesway:.

Amazed me! I finally decided to go legal at my old age.

I went ahead and filled out the paperwork online through L1 last Wednesday, and made a fingerprint appointment for today. I stopped by Brownsburg PD to pay the other $50.00 on the way home. All aspects of the process were largely pain free :D.

Here's hoping that it's closer to a couple of weeks rather than 12 weeks the person in the office told me.

I will keep you guys posted on how long it takes to actually find a license in my mailbox, for comparison purposes...

    Thanks,

I mailed mine off on May 7th. I haven't received it yet. I knew nothing or still know nothing about this "L1" service but it sounds like it's the way I should have went. Oh well...

The intent of the original administrative code was that you had 30 days to reapply prior to the expiration. The dates have been extended by Legislature to 180 days and then to 365 days. The language in the 30 reapplication process has not changed by Legislature and still reflects the original date of 30. The Indiana State Police Department is interpreting the Statute to include the dates that you are eligible for reapplication. You are now allowed 365 days to reapply and anytime within the 365 days you may reapply. As long as you reapply prior to the expiration date of your license, the license is still valid, provided you have the application (dated prior to expiration) and the expired permit in your possession while carrying the handgun.

Quick question. A buddy of mine just moved to Hammond and is going to apply for an LTCH. The HPD website states that a person may use the online application process as well as L1 Solutions for the fingerprinting. However, I am confused. Once the L1 fingerprinting is done, as well as the online application, does he still need to make an appointment to drop everything of at HPD? In the old days we had to do it all through them. Now, I just want to know if my pal can just drop off the application without making an appointment. Their website is confusing, at least to me. Of course, I am an idiot. Help me INGOers.

@spartan933: I'm not sure about Hammond, but in Indianapolis (had I gone with the L1 - which I should have) you just make the appointment with L1 and then follow that by going to the agency (in my case IMPD). An appointment at IMPD was not necessary. Having the option for L1 he should definitely take that route. You have to go to the agency after L1 to complete the paperwork.

    @All:
The State Police just approved my permit on Thursday 9/2. I am very excited and thankful to have that right back. I wanted to share just a portion of that experience to help others in their application. I had to answer yes to the 'dreaded question.' I applied on April 28th. After waiting 12 weeks I called in and found out that I was 'under review' which is a normal part of the process if you say yes to that question. After waiting 2 weeks with no word I called back and was informed that they would be sending me a letter that detailed what additional documentation was needed. My doctor wrote a basic letter as the application information from ISP was pretty vague.

The letter from ISP listed 2 options:
    1. Have your mental health care provider send your complete records for review. (I think not! Even with nothing to hide I did not think this was the option for me)
    2. Have your provider write a letter that contains more specific details about your care. They need to: State that you were seen by their office or are currently a patient, state how long you have been receiving care/have been a patient, what is your diagnosis (mine provided the DSM-IV code), your current medications, your current treatment, and that the provider supports the issuance of the license. (I felt this was the acceptable option and went this path.)

My provider was very nice and willing to write the new letter. She faxed it and the next day the person I spoke with was in the office, I called to very she had received it and she approved, and issued, the permit at that time.

I hope that this information helps other people so that they know what is needed before they apply and wait wait wait. Everyone I worked with at ISP was very, very nice. If you have problems or need to call them please be courteous. It's frustrating as all get out to have to wait this long and have bumps in the road, but they are just doing their job. Any job is noble if nobly done.

Edit: Added more info about L1 process.

has anyone used the 3rd party fingerprinting services?

If you are talking about L1, yes. I just got printed today. I had an 11:15 appointment and she was running late. I was still out of there by 11:20. LOL Now hopefully we can get out of riley this afternoon early enough to go drop the paperwork off downtown.

For the benefit of those that hit "first unread".

I went today to L1 security (5555 n Tacoma) and paid $85.95 and got finger printed. It took about 2 minutes. I got a receipt and headed to the city county building. Once in there, go to the east wing and all the way to the end of the hallway. Get a small form to fill out and pay $50 via money order. They will take thumb and index prints again (I imagine just to make sure they match the L1 records. I was in and out of the city county building in under ten minutes. It was completely painless. Now I will sit and wait for 2-14 days for my lifetime carry permit.

    Total cost:
    $85.95 at L1
    $50.00 at City County building
    $135.95 total cost.

    This was in Marion county.
