For the young'uns here the following video is from a wonderful American and clown from Vincennes Indiana. I had the rare privilege to take my Father-in-law, a Korean war medic and my Father, a veteran of the US Navy during WWII and then again in the US Marine Corps during the Korean conflict, to see Red Skelton live at Purdue University in the early '80's. When I looked at both of these strong, brave men during this segment of Red's program, both of them had stood and placed their hands over their hearts. Both of them had tears in their eyes.

    Irony

The big irony is the socialist origins and nature of the pledge.

Whatever your thoughts on the pledge, this includes interesting and informative history every American should know.

Remember how they used to say the pledge in the 30's?

If the DemocRATS have their way, we might start doing it that way again

But seriously, they actually did it that way back then?

Yes, it was based on the ancient Roman salute, as was the more infamous Nazi or "Heil Hitler" salute to which it is almost identical.

Not surprisingly, it fell out of favor during or shortly after WWII, and was replaced by the familiar hand on heart.

And your point about the DemonRats is well taken, as the current administration's meddling is akin to the fascism of Mussolini's Italy in the 30's.

Let us not forget, however, that the first bailout bill was pushed by the Bush administration.

The real danger is in believing there is any difference in the two major parties aside from which part of government power each is eager to expand.

The powers that many fear in the hands of Dems now were not crafted overnight, but have evolved over many years, under Administrations and congresses both "Democrat" and "Republican".

You pretty much have to go back to the much-maligned "Silent Cal" Calvin Coolidge to find a President who wasn't enamored with the existing power of the office and with expanding it to his benefit.
