No link at the moment but i've been watching this close.
The FBI shutdown megaupload today after unsealing a grand jury indictment from two weeks ago. They also arrested the sites creator Kim Dotcom and six others. This is the tail end of a two year "investigation" where the FBI used millions worth of taxpayer dollars to find out what everybody already knew anyway. Megaupload was known for its reasonably secure and anonymous file storage process. This made for a great service for its users, as it provided simplicity and denyability. It also became a haven for illegal uploads. However it must be noted that Megaupload didn't monitor content (but they did have a stated policy against uploading non-original intillectual property.) (For example: Its like shutting down a bank and arresting the manager because a bunch of pedofiles used safety deposit boxes to hide their child porn. Or closing a school and arresting the principal because a student has weed in. There locker)
And Curious timeing no? The day after the SOPA/PIPA protests. It sounds to me like the federal government is trying to use scare tactics.
Anyway within hours (correction: minutes) of the shutdown and arrests the "hacktivist" group Anonymous shut down the Justice department, FBI, MPAA, and RIAA websites.
All in all an interesting Thursday.
