I see several makes of guns that have the serial number several different places on the gun. XDm's have it on the slide, frame and barrel. Which one do our go by?

The reason I ask is if I bought a XDm compact and put a long slide from a full size XDm on it and the other parts are burnt up in a fire, lost on in a boating accident or whatever, which number is correct?

The receiver is the part that matters. Therefore for your XDm, it's the one on the frame that is the serial number of the firearm.

FWIW, it's common to get Mosin Nagants with mixed serial numbers. Usually the numbers on the other parts will be stamped over or changed with an electropencil.
